Every summer I make my boys thier summer shorts. Bargain fabric into pull on easy shorts.

This year 2 of my boys wnat thier shorts longer then normal. Normal being about a 3 in inseam. they want them to be like thier RTW shorts that are right up to the top of the knee, 7 in inseam.

My Gan Ma loves that the boys are individuals.

My boys Grandmas, My MIL and MM, Think the boys look slopy and will not be sean with them if they wear them. I ask if it was the print no it is the length.

Both of the boys 5 and 7 are modest and would rather wear pants but it gets to hot. they are not baggy the are straight legs.

Help is it something from the 50"s that makes them think this.

Shorts from the store even Walmart are 6.00 I get three pairs out of 1 1/2 yards.

Thanks
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

It's who your boys are that makes you love them, not what they wear. When you left home, you started a new family - it is right to honour and respect your Mum and MIL but you need to do what is right for your family, your boys. Personally, I would make the shorts the way they want them and allow the others time to reflect. Are they really going to cut themselves off from their Grands because of a pair of shorts? shorts were long in the '50's weren't they? Not cropped trousers admittedly.
When mine were little they liked me making clothing for them because it made them feel special. Now they would rather store bought - OK by me. Except I have just made a fab prom dress for my 16 year old - everyone else is in pastel strappy numbers and she is in black satin and burgundy chiffon medievil, but it's what she wanted. she feels special again because I made it for her with love in every stitch.

I only rember the boys in jeans with thin white belts and white t-shirts rolled sleeves and white buck shoes, and they had very pale legs and skinny, not cute in shorts. now i have a grandson who wear shorts all the time some i like some i don't. i don't make them but jean and a hawain print are his favorite. maybe not lower the inseam so much. i am almost 62 and having the grand children go some where with me is the best i let them wear what they want clean and neat is all they need.

I would happily go out with your boys with long shorts. I have 6 grandchildren.

Times change and we have to be flexible. I would never say I wouldn't be seen with one of my kids or grandkids. I love them no matter what they wear.

My granddaughter is only 12, she loves bare belly, lots of glitter and makeup. Her mother condones it, but only a little. Like I said, we have to be flexible.

The only item that I refuse to be seen with is the pant waist around the middle or bottom of the butt.. I don't have to worry about that with my Grands--Their Mom won't allow that.. But , other than that, I will go anywhere with them and I don't care what they wear otherwise...My Grands still love it when I make their clothes... The 14 yr old boy does now prefer that I make him T-shirts and no shorts... but he loves the boxers (for p j's) I make him..

EEEWWWW I am in troubbbblle

Thanks to the wounderful automated email response my mom read what I put down.

She wants me to clearify it

It is beacuse the clothing looks homemade and the boys are dirty when they come on Saturady after noon and they have been playing all day.

I explained they are boys not fashion plates and they most likely wont even be clean on thier wedding days.

Amiee you have four beautiful boys I saw their picture on your site. I had three boys and they were always dirty and sloppy most of the time. They were all boys. I had the same problem with my inlaws but I didn't let them bother me. My boys are well adjusted hard working not afraid to get dirty men now. They are not afraid of work and they feed their families. I guess I would have been talked about if they would have been too clean too.

Mary, my granddaughter goes for the skimpy shirts and the tight shorts and she's 9. The glitter and all the works. Brittney Spears we have to thank for that get up. I too don't open my mouth but I do buy her cute things or make cute things when I can. Hoping all the time she'll grow out of it. Her Daddy gives her looks sometimes when she goes too far with the halters. LOL

Aimee, just gently remind mom that you weren't clean all day at that age, especially on a Saturday afternoon and that you don't recall wearing your good clothes to go play outside. I'm sure she'll understand.

Besides, if you found the courage to let her read these posts, she probably understands. You're a brave woman

Aimee,

Just tell your Mom that if she wants to see your sons shiny clean, she has to come over at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m.:bg: :bg:

As a Grandmother, I remember how surprised (and shocked) I was when my 14 yr. old GD came to visit and had bright green hair! When I said something to my son, he said "It's okay, I save myself for the big battles with her." Upon reflection, I thought that was pretty smart.

One of my kids said " Life's a dirty business, but sombody's got to do it" I think it was the one we knew as " Pig Pen" - she still lives in a stable.

Thank you all for your support.

I thought I was out of it when My mom and mil agreed on something. My Gan ma who will be living with me this summer. it is my turn. Keeps telling my mother to lighten up. She is awesome. She tells my mother you may have been born in England but you are not royal. Gan Ma has changed so much since she turned 90. She is telling my mother things that are turning her hair grey.

I am the baby of 5 girls. I am the opps. there is 9 years between me and the next oldest. I was the dirty one like you mentioned. When I was 8 my father chased me down and stripped me and gave me a bath in the horse trouf because I had not taken a bath in over a week. They are all prim and proper. so are thier kids. the sit still they dont talk. I dont know what I did different. I just think my boys and myself were born with a spirt.

My mother found out that my uncle is from my Gan ma's first marriage. who knew she was married before. this came out when MIL said she never thought her son would marry a divorce.

Mom says that Gan ma is not he woman that raised her. Has this happened to you??

My 2 Cents worth..
You are the 'normal ' one... Most of the adults in this world who are so uptight, are the ones never allowed to 'just get dirty' as children.. My Mother had one rule.. "Put on your playclothes before you go out to play." After that, we were on our own as long as we didn't get into dangerous places or situations...If we were nasty when we returned home(wet or muddy) we had to undress on the back porch down to underwear so as not to track red clay into the house.. Our backporch had wood halfway up and the rest was screened in so no one could see us..We all grew up totally well adjusted functioning adults.. As for your Gan Ma, she sounds like a wonderful person.. I would love to have someone like that around.. She says what she thinks and should be respected for it.. Sounds like she has earned and deserves that, at least, and love also.....:bg: :bg:

Let them wear long shorts! I had a similar situation with FIL -- he thought the shorts and hair was a little too long and insisted on more conservative attire when hanging with gramps. A rather 'cosmopolitan' beer-buddy of his told him to loosen up and let the kids be kids.

To prove his point, grampa's buddy showed up at a BBQ last weekend wearing a pair of knee length maroon and silver dazzle shorts (I gave his wife the pattern and fabric -- they were happy to participate!). He was the hit of the party and now gramps appears to be OK with the slightly longer hair and shorts my kids are sporting these days.

You guys are so great!!!!!!:nah:

It is so nice to around open minded free individuals.

My hubby has been wearing very baggy pants in the ugliest colors and no one tells him no to wear. But the boys they are full of opinions. it is nice that Gan ma is living with us and she is sticking up for us. And boy is she not affraid of what she says.

My hubby too. He likes his cotton seersucker golf shorts -- gag!!

I think everyone, no matter how big or old, should be able to express their own sense of fashion. My sister's BIL had a hit song with a line I really like "Hey man you've got a real bum's eye for clothes"

My 19 year old at church - motorcycle boots, red and black horizontal striped tights, red and yellow wrap around miniskirt with dragons on, black lace see through blouse. No one batted an eyelid except one man said to me " you know you are getting old when you don't understand the fashions of the young"

None of us understand Katies fashions, let alone her friends but she is an individual! When at the Pantomime a man made his son(10) turn his head away so as not to look at the tart. Little did he know that she probably worked at his sons school and was supervising him at mid-day. Talk about judging by appearances.

I sneaklily tried on the black and red plastic mini skirt when she was out - scarey!

Go Grampa's Beer Buddy!
