I have had an Ott Light bulb for about a year, during which time it has been used only a few times per month for anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. It burned out today. In contrast other flourescent lights in my house burn for hours at a time every day and last for years. What experience have you had with this? I will definitely not be replacing it with another Ott, I'll use a compact flourescent for a third the price and many times the life. |

My sister has one that sits on your table. She is not impressed either. She says unless your work is directly under it, it's very ineffective.

I have replaced all of the regular bulbs in my sewing room lights with the GE Reveal Bulbs. A lot, cheaper, more effective and longer lasting that the Ott lights. Patsy Patsy

I purchased one of the Ott lite swirl bulbs to use in my task light next to the sewing machine and found that it just wasn't bright enough. The swirl bulb has more watts than any of the other table top Ott lamps, so I figured I would need that one. Even with that bulb, it wasn't nearly as bright as my 100 watt reveal bulb, so I've put the swirl bulb in a drawer to be dug out only when I'm trying to match colors. I'll have to say I was totally unimpressed with it. Ann C

It can only be returned for one year and I'd had it longer. Someone mentioned Reveals are halogens or something, do they burn hotter than incandescants? I'm afraid to have something like that around as my kids will ignore precautions and end up burning themselves or their craft materials. For now I've replaced with a compact flourescent but haven't tried it out yet. I did find the Ott too weak and can always use daylight to match colors. When I fabric shop I take my fabric, thread and notions over to the window to check the colors. |

Reveal bulbs are regular lightbulbs with a blue coating on them. Definitely not halogens. I do not and will not have a halogen lamp anywhere in my house. Patsy Patsy

Talking about matching in daylight - I do that also - taking things in fabric stores to the window to match, but most all my sewing is done in the wee hours of the morning with only either incandescent or flourescent bulbs and trying to see how well something matches with regular daylight is impossible since it is usually pitch black outside!! I read something in one of my DH woodworking mags a few months ago talking about lighting and how the wattage on incandescent bulbs compare with the wattage on flourescent. It figured out that the 18 watt flourescent, which is what the swirl bulb is (and by the way - this is the highest wattage put out by Ott unless they have something new I don't know about) is the equivalent of less than 75 watts incandescent. I keep two incandescent task lights - one at the SM and the other at the serger - and they are both 100 watt reveals. It could be that if they made a higher wattage bulb, I would be satisfied with the light it puts out. When I started getting the Reveal bulbs, I got them for my sewing room only, but then started buying them for all our lamps, fixtures, etc. DH says that he doesn't think they last as long as regular light bulbs. Anyone else done any "scientific" research on this? Ann C

Windows in fabric stores!! Wow, what a great novelty!. Ours are buried deep in the bowels of the shopping centre and if I wanted daylight, I would be arrested for shoplifting! I did have halogens by my bedside, as I love reading in bed at night. It burns very hot and not good for summer as you feel the heat. |
