Sorry I have been away so long. I spent most of May & the beginning of June getting ready for my DD wedding on the 14th. It went wonderfully. On the 19th of June my father was scheduled for surgery. His bladder cancer that he has been battling for 19 yrs. finnally won & they had to take his bladder & prostate. When they got in there they found more cancer in his right kidney & euteter so they had to be removed also. Then they found 100 gall stones. so the gall bladder was removed. & the appendix was inflamed so that was removed. He is 85 1/2 yrs. old. He came through all the surgery great physically but it took a toll on him mentally. He had a bad reaction to the anestesia & morphine. He became dellusional. they called Phyc in for a consult. He wouldn't sleep because he didn't like the dreams. so they gave him something to help him sleep & he slept all day last wed. Thurs. morn about 3:30 he vomitted & asperated some which put him in respritory distress. So back to SICU. He is doing better & will probably be in his own room tommorrow. but he hasn't been on his feet for almost 2 weeks. So he will need physical therapy. He was not a typical 85 yr old, he drove his car(no tickets). He baked cookies for the family, He went to senior groups 2 or 3 times a week, & he cooked and shopped for himself. He could really use some extra prayers. Sorry this was so long but that is how my life has been lately & I'm trying to catch up. Barb

Mom of six, your Dad sounds wonderful. I am pulling for him and sure he will be quite fine in no time. He's just the type to pull thru something like that and be up and gone in no time.

He was not doing real well today until his family Dr. came in then he perked up & asked for split pea soup. He ate amost the full bowl & a couple of bites of cake. He wanted to take a nap but told us not to throw away the cake he would eat it later. The Dr. was a little upset because the urologist ordered no more sedation then the phyciatrist ordered Haldol which is a major sedative. He was going to write a STRONG note to the Phyciatrist & let him know that Dad won't get better by sleeping. That made the family & Dad feel better. He is going to follow up on it tommorrow & if he still has him on it he is going to page him & let him know about Dad because we don't think they really believe us. I am going to try to get into the sewing room know for at least a few minutes of therapy before they have to put me on something. I don't think I can take many more 8 hour days at the hospital but I also can't leave him alone. Barb Barb

Barb, You all will certainly be in my prayers.. I can identify with the sewing room therapy.. That is what kept me sane for the last two years of my working life.. Things were so bad in our dept, I could not wait to get home and hibernate in my sewing room.. If I didn't sew but 5 minutes, it helped .. and it's a lot cheaper than a Psychiatrist also... and someone gets a gift at the end of it.. I will be praying for your Dad.. and all of you for the strength you need.. Sew With Love

Dad is SOOOOO!!! much better today. He is asling for physical therepy and holding his own cup to drink. Isn't amazing what a little change in Meds can do. He asked to sit in a chair & watch The Price is Right @ 11:00. So we think he is on his way back. Thanks for all the prayers & keep them coming. Barb Barb

Mom of Six, I know 1st hand what you went thru! I am so happy to hear your dad is feeling much better! My mom was very ill too and had many many things wrong and I was the only one who stood by her and was there for her; unfortunately, she gave up after my brother was killed in an accident by a drunk driver, 2 months before she died. I felt so bad coz we lost my (real) dad, brother, & mom last yr. So, keep hanging in there and I'll keep you and yours in my prayers; I know God sent me some angels when I needed them!! Dawn |

Thank You Dawn! Dad is doing very well today. Rehab has been working with him. Yesterday he walked 3 steps forward & back with a walker but it tired him out very much. The Phyciatrst lowered hi medicine & today he is awake and alert. In fact he dropped his call button tonight & thought enough to call us and have us call the hospital to send a nurse in to help him. Yesterday on the other medicine he didn't really understand how to use the call button. He will be released tommorrow or Monday & go into a rehab center for 1-2 weeks until he can dress himself & get in & out of bed alone. Then we will probably take turns staying with him for a while until the Drs. say he is well enough to be alone. Thank you all for your prayers. When I told Dad I posted here he said I will take all the prayers I can get. Barb Barb
