Hi members, I have been buying clothing from a local thrift store(on certain days, all clothing items sell for 99cents each, you can get fantastic fabric, buttons, wonderful lace (the very expensive kind that goes on wedding gowns. Most of what I buy is for these purposes, imagine getting a $100.00 worth of lace for 99cents.. Many items that never got sold in regular stores still have the original price tags on them. It is great fun to take different parts from different items of clothing (and I mean very high end quality) and put together to make unique garments for yourself or others. My favorites are pure silk, which I am collecting to make some sort of original rainbow colored dress & it will definitely be one of a kind. I bought a Brand New $300.00 bridesmaid gown made of raw silk for 99c. Imagine that. I get so excited at the possibilities. About the only things I purchase new are undies and socks. Does anyone else do this? If not, try it, it is amazing what you can create.

Wow, you have found a gold mine. 99cents day would be a hoot for me. Welcome to Sew Whats New.

What have you done with some of your fantastic finds?

Cool! This sounds like a lot of fun. There was an article in Threads magazine about a woman who does this. She only makes size 6 clothes though and sells them as origianl designs. Very cutting edge

I'm think once school starts I'm hitting the thrift stores.

I am larger, so I make my stuff sort of along the line of a looser fit garment, that would cover several sizes. My figure problem is that I have no waistline to speak of(LOL) a little overweight, but have a large rib cage which just doesn't go well with closely fitted garments. My oldest daughter owns her own business, Amberwolf Graphics (<email address removed for privacy>) At least I think that is the right site address. Well, in the very new future, she will be showing a branch-off to sell my garments-tentatively called Cut and Peace(not piece) as many of my items reflect the hippy type style of the late '60's,early '70's, during the time I was attending the University of Alabama. And any ladies in their 50's in age will know this hippy influence in clothing is coming back with a vengeance. I love it! I have been collecting a whole lot of white, and natural color dresses with Battenberg Lace, with which I will make some unique blouses or tops, may dye some of them. I am trying to figure out an unusual hat made with shoulder pads(possibly a beanie type)Anyone got any ideas on that. Thanks, Anne

The amount of fabulous things you can find in thrift stores never fails to excite me!
Here in the UK we don't really get fabrics or haby in our 'charity' shops, but I'm always on the lookout for curtains, ballgowns etc that I can cut up and create with!
And of course, buying garments for their accesories (fastenings, buttons, frog fasteners, embellishments...) is always a favourite!
