Hi there,

Have only just registered for this forum and it looks very interesting.

My problem since I put on considerable amount of weight is although I have shirt patterns that fit etc. they all work down the back when being worn eg. the top button works up to the throat & the collar or back neck works down my back sort of tipping the shirt backwards, is there some way I can alter the pattern to fix this problem. This also happens with T/shirts.

Hoping someone out there can shed some light on this, tried the search button but bit difficult to put problem into short concise search terms.

Cheers

It took awhile but I finally found where I had read it.
From Threads #65, pg. 62 - 67. Hope this helps.

Ree & BrendaLou, the reason this happens is because there isn't enough fabric across your back. Your back is trying to "steal" fabric from the front. There are two alterations to help this; you may need to use just one or both. You can either try in a muslin or by tissue fitting the pattern (my preference).
The first one (and easiest) is for forward shoulders. Just cut from 1/4" to 3/4" from the front shoulder seam and tape that same piece to the back shoulder seam.
The second is for rounded back, which is very common in our computer age. For this one, you would have to draw a line at a square angle to the grain line across the shoulder of the back pattern piece (approximately in the middle of the sleeve). Then you cut to, but not through the seam line on the pattern piece, and spread the center back seam the amount needed (1/4" to 3/4") tapering to nothing at the sleeve seam.
I hope this is clear enough for you; it is much easier to do than it is to write.
Good luck!

Many thanks Lee,

will give these solutions a go have been trying to solve this one for awhile so will make a pattern off the old one with the alterations you suggest and give it a go have some cheap cotton material will try that first (can always use a loose cotton shirt)
