Okay, now that we have our power back on ( a few of us still having rolling black outs) what did you do with your time? How many of you found out your sewing machines just didn't work without power!!!! Did you remember how to do hand sewing? How many of you had withdrawals???? I guess that they are blaming a power grid here in Northeast Ohio for the shut down and not a thunderstorm as first reported. First Energy in Akron is getting ALOT of flac for not seperating themselves from the rest of the lines. GM in both Mich and Ohio are getting some flac too. Will be very interesting to see what comes out of this. You just can't run 21st century technology on 19th century equipment. |

Well I am very thankful it missed us here in Vermont, but by a few hairs to say the least. Glad your power is back on Sewhappie. In New England at least once a year normally every winter we have a blackout due to the cold or especially the snow and ice. It is a good thing we have a wood stove. I bought cast Iron cookware just in case and sure enough I used ... right on the wood stove. A whole entire meal at that. We try to keep candles, matches, firewood and lanterns, not to mention blankets and pillows and bottled water stored in a cabinet downstairs. Good things to have in any kind of weather for an emergency. I was given a old treadle sewing machine and it works great. I love it and the kids think I am nuts! .. But that's alright, cause I can still sew. threads_40 "Your goal is greater than your struggle"

Threads_40, Are you anywhere near Londonderry Vermont? My mom was born there and I think that there is still family there. I have not been there since I was a very young teen. I remember going to a General Store in a small town on the way to Burlington and buying the BIGGEST pickel I have ever seen right out of the barrel!!!!! I have a very special love for Vermont!!!! |

Hi, I was in the black out, I posted this in Home and Health and , Take A Break. I live in Burlington Ontario, we got power on around 10 P.M. On my way home it was black it was errie, no stop lights on , I have to admit people were good handling them like a four way stops I was almost out of gas!! enough to get home from work , on my way back to work I had to go to five Gas station's to get Gas!!!My gas light was on for awhile , I was sure I was going to run out before I got back to work, There were line ups like I never seen before, I felt like I was in a nightmare,LOL . Bank card's were not working , you needed cash!!! I will never let my tank be low on gas again !!! I will stash some money away in my wallet,!!! I will keep a flash light in my car,!!! and I will allway's have extra water in my home!!! What an eye opener that was, I'm on my kid's to do the same, oh how we take things for granted, I hope things get better soon and stay that way , were still getting brown out's , that may go on for day's, I'm so glad to be home today and Know all my family are well. God I feel grateful!!! __________________ Bren:

Yes we had that here too!for cooking we used our BBQ,it was slow for making a pot of tea though lol.So I told my DH as soon as possible we must buy a camping stove!at least we can use both burners on that. It was I guess somewhat like the war days, finding ways to cope, as My Mother used to tell me stories about the war, and living during those times.Maybe we should practic our girl guide days and "Always be prepared" motto. We filled buckets of water just incase.I remember going on holidays cottage type, many years ago as a child,we had to go to a tap for our water, that all came back to me with the power outage. I missed the power and sewing also puter, but kept busy with my grandkids feeding them with BBQ food lol.We had a visitor from the UK then also,so it made a new experience for all lol. If at first you don't suceed, try-try again!
