Leah, the skirt is lovely. Tell us more about how you drafted it. Is it several gores that "add up" to half a circle? Or is it a single half circle with only the one seam down the back?

habanerohutch,

There are front and back, two half circles, the back piece has seam allowance for zipper in the middle.

The drafting on the paper is quite simple, I just follow certain formula. You will need a curve ruler and a L or T ruler, your waist, abdomen & hip measurements, and of course the length of the skirt you prefer.

I will post some pics after I refer to my sewing class notes.:-)

Here you can look at the steps in drafting this pattern.

Step by step pattern drafting (http://sew-good.netfirms.com/sewing_projects.html)

I realised it's actually called "Flare Skirt" in English. I was refering to a non English book, and the literal translation is "half bias skirt", so I thought this is a half circular skirt. Sorry for the mistake.

Leah, thanks for posting the diagrams of how you drafted the skirt. I only had time for a quick peek this morning. Now I will go back and study them more closely.

and by the way, "Circle skirt" and "Half Circle Skirt" are perfectly acceptable descriptions in English. there is even a "Quarter Circle skirt". Each one is a flared skirt, just different amounts.

Hi, Leah, I just wanted to know if you have followed any patternmaking book when you drafted your skirt and what book is it if any? Thanks.

Hi, Betssy,
The book is in Chinese! In fact, it shows 2 ways of drafting the flare skirt, one is cut and slash a sloper skirt and another is this method that I am using. I also took a quick look at another book that I have, Sarah Doyle's "Keys to pattern drafting", she shows a slightly different "formula" for drafting the flare skirt.

Hi, Leah,
Thanks for your reply. I'm interested in buying the book of Sarah Doyle which is Sarah's Key to Pattern Drafting. How do you find her book? Have you tried her method? Is it easy or complicated? I've been searching for a good patternmaking book, that's the reason I wanted to know before I finally decide to buy. Thanks again.

hi, betssy, you r welcome.
I got Sarah Doyle's book from her website. www.sewwithsarah.com. I saw it on ebay before, so you may be able to get an older print fr ebay.

The book is written in 1970s, though it was revised over the years, the illustrations in the books and the fashions are a bit vintage.:-) It never the less cover some basic ideas on "Oriental method of pattern drafting" and ideas for fitting irregularities. Some of the "formulae" are a bit outdated (according to my sewing instructor) since ppl have modified and found out better fitting method over the years.

The sketches are hand drawn, so the layouts of the books are a bit messy. Anyway, I used this book to get me acquinted with the basics and the lingos of the method. Now, I can look at the scaled down sketches in magazine and figure out how to sketch the patterns myself.
