My question (which I also emailed to RIT dye company) is, should I dye the whole piece of fabric before I cut it? Or should I dye the pieces after I've cut them? Or should I dye the garment after it's been assembled? I'm going to pre-wash the fabric tonight, and then either dye or cut, depending on the answers I get here and elsewhere. Thanks!! I would dye the fabric before cutting, then you can be sure of even dye distribution. If you cut then dye there is always a possibility that it might not 'take' on one piece and rats - the whole lot is ruined. Failing that, dye the garment after making it up but be aware that thread and fabric will have different dye uptake. Soooo, on the whole I'm still in favour of dying first, then colour matching the thread.(I've yet to find a dye that does exactly what it says on the tin because of the differences in fabric) I assume you are using natural fibres and a washing machine to dye?

Well, I was going to try the stovetop method, because RIT said I can get the most vibrant color that way. But with such a large amount of fabric, I'm afraid it will have to go in the washing machine. I'll just add boiling water every ten minutes or so.
