Hi I don't see a whole on the subject of knitting.
I knit and crochet quilt and have embroidery machine.
I do as much as I am able to.I haven't knitted in years, but decided to do it again.I have been trying to findd pattern for checkerboard knittted slippers.I found the patttern on WoolWorks
but instructions aren't very clear or accurate. Does anyone know where I may find the pattern?
This is a very good forum. There is so much information.

Here is the pattern. There is the stripe one and the checkboard one. Gosh I remember my grandmother making these.

thanks joannequilts for quick reply. you probably think I'm an old timer (I'm 58) when you saw that request. I love old old patterns for knitting and quilting. I retired in April and have more time to do the things I love. I have RLS so I can't sit for long periods of time. That is where I saw the patterns but I'm lost on how to sew them up. I'm talking about the gore with the stripe.

Aren't they cute?:coffee:

No don't think of you as an old timer, I just remember my grandmother making these and I would sell them for her down south as a little girl. Every year she would send sooooooooo many lol for me to sell and mens work socks. They lasted forever it seems and were warm and comfy.

Here I am again needing some help. The pattern says knit every row.
I don't know to change colors without them getting twisted.
I don't know which side the yarn is carried.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The easiest way to keep them from twisting is when you do one color untwist and place to the side you are not using, continue with the second color and so on. When you start your new yarn always pull it from the centre and there will be much less twisting as well.

It is slow at first but comes easy after a while. The best description of the technique is in a book I purchased 20 years ago but I am sure there are other knitting books at the library that would illustrate the technique. What you need is a real live knitting friend that could show you. Could you maybe ask someone at a yarn shop to show you? Failing that, good pictures would help. Seems to me those slippers were made thick by pulling the unused yarn tight at the back when changing colors but I don't remember in reading over the instructions that they called for that. Must dig out my old knitting books and see if I can find that old pattern. Let us know how you manage.

I just wanted to say that I tried it again yesterday and it worked.
thanks for all the help. it's the way you twist the yarn.took me awhile but I finally got the hang of it and it's fun and easy.
I made one pair by knitting a row and then purling a row and it turned out just as nice

Countryblocks, welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile :Canada:

My SIL is living with us now and she knits constantly. I just received a lovely pullover sweater done in shades of brown, cream and beige for the fall.

Now she is knitting an angora sweater for herself.

ooooooooo - angora - mmmmmmmm take out a mortgage? I'm petrified to start something that expensive in case it turns out too itchy and I can't wear it. Well, that works for Mohair anyway..
Think of all those bald small furry animals...

This angora is definitely not itchy, just so soft. Mohair is sometimes beautiful and sometimes not!

Just wanted to stop by and say I got a pair of checkerboard slippers made for my gandson.I finally got the hang of it although I do get my yarn twisted now and the.It has been
many years since I have knitted but I find it relaxing.
I can't afford angora.I just buy regular yarn.I'm trying to use up my basket of yarn. Thst's why I chose slippers.I think I'll knit him a hat and scarf.I do crochet also but I wanted to get into this
ffor a change.
