Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows how to make children's hats. I tried one of the little girl's hats from a pattern that I have, but I can't seem to get it right. Any tips will be greatly appreciated... |

I made my daughter a cute little hat with a brim on it to keep the sun off her face when she was younger. It was a pattern that came with a dress. The pieces were interfaced. It went together fairly easy and was really cute. The hardest part was probably sewing the round piece on the top of the hat. I think I just had to clip it some and it worked out good. Is this the kind of hat you are talking about? I also make polar fleece hats for her and they are even easier and really cute! |

The hat that I am using comes with a child's dress. It is by Simplicity (New Look ... for Kids #6192). It seems like a simple hat to make, but both times that I have tried it, it comes out too big and the top of it isn't pointy enough. Also, the sides seem to puff out. This type of hat has a brim, but it's not a hard one like a ball cap. It goes all the way around. I hope you can get a picture of it by my explanation. Thanks for the help thus far! I really like this site. |

Marge -- Look for Buckram to interface with. I get it at Jo-Anns. It's stiff enough for hats. I use it in purses. Dorothy |

I went to www.simplicity.com and searched for design 6192. Pulled up some fairly clear pictures of the hat. It is one of those round "helmet" style hats like we often make in fleece. Made of "petal" shaped pieces (probably 4, I couldn't see how many). the narrow part of the "petals" comes together at the crown of the head. The "brim" is a ruffle. It's kinda cute. From the shape of the petals in the picture, I would not expect the hat to have any kind of point. It is pictured as round. Also each petal has rounded sides that appear a bit wider than the bottom edge. If that is correct, then it will puff out a bit at the sides. I have never seen the actual pattern pieces, so I am just deducing from the pictures. As for it coming out too large, I can only say, try a smaller size. The sizing is from New Born to Large (whatever that might be.) Measure the child's head. then measure the pattern pieces and you should be able to calculate which size will fit the chhild. Be sure you are using the seam allowances that the pattern intends you to use. Lala Chile Pepper from Texas

Thanks habanerohutch!!! I really appreciate it. I am still a beginner and trying to learn how to use and adjust these patterns. |
