Hi yep it is me and I am flattered you think I know my stuff. For the book covers I hope I can explain it so you can follow. I use 4 way stretch swimsuit spandex/lycra. it works the best. this pattern fits standard text books IYou need to cut a strip of fabric 24 inches by 8 inches. hem the short side I like 1/4 of and inch then fold the short sides in 5 1/2 inches leaving about 2 an 1/2 inches in the middle that is not covered. Like a book cover I serge it down the long side to secure it. then I fold the serged edge that is exposed in the middle stitching it down. I hope this makes sense. Also I use wooly nylon in the bobbin and the lower looper. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

This pattern sounds great but is there also a way to use woven fabric? I want to use up some of the uglier fabrics I have gotten in grab bags. Thanks, Gina Gina

I would guess that you would need to measure the book that you want to place it on and then make it from there. You can send me the seasurements of the book and I can come up with a pattern for you if you want.

Aimee, I bought one of the 'stretch book covers' to use for a pattern.. office depot has them for $ .96 (cents).. the inside seam is in shape of a Y (sideways).. Is that what you said in your directions??. I cannot figure out what you mean when you say serge down the long side to secure it.. Sorry to be dense, but can you maybe say it in different words.. Sometimes that helps me.. Thanks.. Sew With Love

you are not dense I have a hard time explaining my self. What I mean is that. you have the fabric laying flat. You fold he sides in 5 1/2 inches towards the center. there is 2 12 inches that is not covered by the fabric. I will look like a book cover.then I serge the fabric from one fold all the way to the other fold. on both of the long sides. I wish I could draw a picture. I am a better artist. If you have the one you purchased you turn it inside out and you will see that the long sides are serged to make the pockets that go over the front and back of the book. This is probbable clear like mud. But I hope it helps. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Aimee, Thanks,,, fold to fold did the trick... Now I understand.. The one I bought is cut in a weird shape to begin with... That helped a lot to confuse me.. Your way is much better an uses less fabric...Thanks a million, Girl.. The Grands are gonna love these.. Their DM said they cost too much to buy.. and I agree.. when I can make them now thanks to you.. Sew With Love

Glad I could help. I started making them cause I had lots of fabric left over and the ones they were selling looked well bad. Now I can make them with strips for the school colors.

I've made reversible woven bookcovers by laying the open book on the fabrics and cutting a piece a few inches longer than the open book and about an inch wider (top to bottom). Sew the fabrics together right sides together leaving a space to turn. Finish the hole after you turn it, fold the long edges over and sew them down close to the edge and just slip the book in. Be careful when you turn the edges over -- if they don't fit well it can slip off easily or be tough on the binding but if you do it right you ave quite a bit of room to play with. Dorothy |
