Ok, I have to say this is my first attempt at Fusible applique. But my project is simple. Or so I thought... I want to make a halloween cardigan out of a rtw sweatshirt. So far I have opened and finish the edges on my sweatshirt. Now I'm trying to applique square and rectangle halloween motifs around my bottom edge. I've already applied my motifs with heat'n'bond fusible web to the shirt edge. Now I'm trying to stitch around my motif edges to finish them off. I've tried zig-zag(didn't like the coverage) then I tried an applique stitch(works better with a turned under edge) and then I tried satin stitch... in my small test sample everything went ok. But now that I'm actually working on the cardigan, I don't even get half way around my applique before my thread starts skipping and breaking. I tried changing my needle to a ballpoint and even putting a sticky stabilizer on the back of the applique. I'm using a Viking Lily 545 machine. At this rate it will take me forever to do all of these appliques Can anyone give me some tips on how to correct this??? Trish So much Fabric, so little time.

If you are useing regular Heat n Bond in the red pakage you cant sew through it. It will gumm up the needle and has been known to cause machine damage. Best to use fabric paint to seal the edges. If you are useing Heat n Bond Lite in the purple package change your needle. this is ment to be sewn through and you will need a 12 to 14 needle and I add a little sewers aid to the needle every sew often. Let us know how it turns out. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Oh Man, it is the Red HeatnBond package! And I've already fused most of the motfis on it... I really don't want to use fabric paint on it.... Any suggestions? Trish So much Fabric, so little time.

PLEASE,,, Take this advice ! ! If you do not ever listen again to anything I say, please listen to me this time.. Do not ever again buy Heat N Bond... Get the first and best .. "Wonder Under" by Pellon.. You will never have any such problems, I guarantee... They came out with the first fusible and nobody can match them for Quality...My Shop was out of wonder under one time and I bought heat n bond.. I used it one time and it was AWFUL... I tried to give the unused portion away and nobody would take it, so I finally threw it away... I do without now if they have sold all their wonder under and wait till they get more.. Sew With Love

I use Heat and Bond Lite and have never had a problem. I'll give the Wonder Under a try if I see some. Dorothy |

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I went this morning and bought some of the HeatnBond Lite and Steam a Seam 2 to try. I skipped the Wonder Under, it looked liek it was peeling away form the paper and looked old so I didn't get it. I started a brand new cardigan. It's working so much better now, no problems. I learned a hard lesson. I already had the HeatnBond ultra on hond and diddnt' bother to check the directions, if I had, I would have noticed it says not to sew it DUH! I really don't want to waste the other cardigan so I'll probably try to salvage it somehow... Trish So much Fabric, so little time.

I have not seen steam a seam 2 in any of my stores. Was there a 1?? I never saw it either... I have Hancocks, Wl-Mart, and Mary Jos cloth store. in my area... Does this steam a seam come on a bolt or in a package or both.. I heard Nancy Z. mention it on her program, I think...I have been using wonder under for 13 years( since the first time I saw it) and never have had the first failure or problem... I'll look at the steam a seam if I find it... Maybe I'll borrow a swatch from someone to try... I'm leary of spending my money on another brand that I have no experience with..

Hey Libby, the original is just Steams a Seam I think. I buy it from the Notions wall at Joanns in a package. I've never seen it on a bolt. You can buy it in a lil roll in varing Inch thicknesses or buy a package of flat sheets of it. I've used on hems and love it. Trish So much Fabric, so little time.

I finally finish the Cardigan. Took me all day, but I'm so pleased. This was my first attempt at applique and once I got past all the problems it was much easier than I thought, or at least doing squares and rectangles was easy. I'll have to work my way up to circle shapes... Aimee, thank you again for telling me aobut te red heatnbond. I would have been cusing all day and been totally turned off to applique for good. I"m so glad I tried again, it was fun. Trish So much Fabric, so little time.

Glad I could help. On the other cardigan you can heat the back side of where you did the first ones with th eheat n bond and it should release the appliques. they may leave a little residue but you will be able to use the cardigan again'

For hems, I just buy the rolls of fusible web off the notions wall... But for Appliques, I use the paper backed which is called wonder under.. I keep a roll of the hemming web on hand at all times... And, I keep a small roll in my suitcase first aid kit... this goes on all my trips, since I kinda have the reputation of being prepared for any emergency...

Hey that 's a great idea. I never would have thought of taking it on a trip to fix hems. I need to remember that. Trish So much Fabric, so little time.
