I am spending more and more time sewing (a rediscovered love) and finding that my neck, shoulders, arms and hands get sore. I have looked up information about sewing ergonomics on the web and found several sources of products, e.g. tiltables for the sewing machine and serger, foot stations, chairs, etc.

Currently, my sewing machine is on doorstops to tilt its angle on a card table and my serger on a foldable table purchased at an office supply store. My chair is an old office chair purchased at a thrift store. I'm pretty sure I want to add a tilting option but I think I also want an extension for my machine work surface.

What suggestions can you offer for adjustments you have found beneficial? I find you folks offer wonderful assistance to each other via the web. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Sandi
P.S. Any Iowa sewers out there?

having it tilted might not be the problem but the height. There is a good book called dream sewing spaces. It gives the proper height for the sewing machine and you chair in relation. I thought that that my tabel was the right hight. I found out that I had to have a lower table so that the bed of the sewing machine was at the right height for me. If the machine is not on the table it looks soooo wrong.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Recently on the Simply Quilts show they were talking about ergonomics. She said that the key is to have your knees and elbows at 90 degree angles.

I also sew on an office folding table, and for me, it is way to high. I have to sew on it though, as it is all I have to sew on. So I dream of the day I can buy a real sewing table (like at Sears) that is the correct height. Perhaps you can raise your chair to the right height and then put a box of some sort to raise your feet up. Just a thought.

Good luck.
