My daughter (7) has been snivelling all week about our lack of cable TV now that it has disconnected. Before the weekend came she had her two days all lined up at her friend's house. She couldn't wait to get away from this self-induced poverty! I do miss some of the programs on CMT and AP but for the most part, it's 100 channels of garbage anyway. I do miss Carol Duvall and the Comedy channel especially, but it won't be forever. The daughter screamed, "I can't live without cable!" I wonder what the kids in Afganistan are crying about.... E. |

you have reminded me of the time we rented a holiday home on an isolated beach front with no TV for 10 days. DS 9yr and DD5yr I thought we were going to have the holiday from hell they mooched around moaning and groaning the first couple of days but then learnt to explore and amuse themselves. I had taken a plie of books to read and demanded at least 2hrs to myself each day bliss. There were other lessons like conserving water - ie short showers and not always flushing the toilet al novel concepts to our kids. SKye |

Is that all it takes to get some time to yourself? Maybe I'll turn mine off! I was supposed to have Friday to myself but, DH went to work late Then DD went to the clinic at school and was diagnosed with Strep Throat so I had to pick her up & go get meds. at the store, It was my day for Dad's dinner so most of the afternoon was preparing & taking care of DD. Maybe this week I will get a day. My house is a mess & I can't really clean with people around. ( I do make them help me pick up some). Barb Barb

My dghtr recently got over strep throat. We were visiting mom at the coast and my dhtr had a fever of 103! The advice nurse at hospt sugg Tylenol for fever. My dghtr continually complained that her ear hurt (not inside the ear though) on the cartlidge of her ear. Well, I never heard of such a thing. She hadn't been hit or anything. She and her friend had been building sand castles all day, throwing sand and spraying the hose. So any possible scenario came to mind but nothing made sense. According to Dr. Drop-dead-goreous (where were these guys when I was little?), the swelling of adnoids or some such canal along the neck can cause pain in the ear, even the outer ear. A trip to the store for Advil (for swelling) and a prescription of Amoxycillan (for infection), had us on our way home. The next morning, she was so much livelier. I've noticed lately that these things always seem to happen on vacations, when we're away from home or, on a Saturday or Sunday? I've think I've seen the insides of more emergency rooms than scheduled appointments since my daughter was born. She is a very healthy child but, I can remember one time when she hit her head on the side of an end table in such a way that a huge bump developed. It scared me to death, thinking skull fracture. It turned out to be just an ugly bruise but I err on the side of overprotection. This threw a specially-planned Brunch off schedule but we do what we must for our fledglings, don't we? So, I'm wondering what caused the strep throat. It's been cloyingly hot here for the past month. Anything above 83 is horrid for me. I get more headaches because of heat. I drink lots of water for dehydration now. My day care admits there's a boy that has many problems with toncillitis and had an surgery lined up for end of August. Could that have affected my daughter's bout with strep. My limited medical sauvy elludes me now, I'm afraid. Stay well fellow sewers. Eileen |

She could have caught the strep throat anywhere. People can carry it and not be sick. My daughter usually gets it about once or twice a year. The last time she had it her ear was really sore inside, worse than her throat. It turned out to be strep. Of course, it happened on a Saturday night, so we spent all Sunday morning at the hospital waiting to see a doctor. |

We were there Sunday, too. Fortunately, we could wait a day later til we went to the hospital. We were within 7 miles of the nearest hospital and roads were clear. There is lot of strep going around, apparently, as my boss had a fever of 103 also. I started wondering about SARS, measels (those are back). When I was in Mauia, the health client said my daughter would have to be tested for TB as it is a problem there. Many foreign nationalities live in the area that may not have had vaccination rules and therefore came into this country with no immunization records. Her test came back negative but it got me to thinking. |
