My husband is gone (a lot), 2-3 wks out of month, EVERY month and I always wind up throwing out food. Theres only 2 of us here ( I don't count the 3 ferrets...they don't like people food)
you'd think we'd plan better or something...I eat out or eat frozen while he's gone (who wants to cook for one person...)But we always seem to have food that goes bad....I hate the waste but everything comes in packages for families and thats fine, if there are more than two in your house...

There is just hubby and I here now but I still cook enough for a large family - and freeze it in the proper serving size for the two of us. I make huge pots of homemade soups, vegetarian cabbage rolls, vegetarian lasagna, etc. This way, we eat healthy food that is easy to heat and serve with just the addition of a salad or steamed veggies. It's a pain cooking for just two, so must be worse for just one. We don't eat those over processed canned or frozen foods - no food value and full of chemicals and sodium. This works for me anyway!

I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

I have the same problem. I hate to waste food, but by the time we are done our day and I clean up, I am too pooped to divide and freeze for another time. Not only that, hubby really doesn't like freezer food that much.

I try to make large quantities when I cook things like chili, red beans, jambalaya, etc. to have enough left over to freeze for another meal. It comes in handy when I don't have time to cook, or just don't feel like it. Since I get home before hubby, I thaw it in the microwave, heat it up, and put it in another pot or pan. He never realizes it's left-overs.:nah:
When you get used to freezing left overs, it's not that much trouble to pour them into a freezer container or ziplock bag and throw them in the freezer. I figure if I'm going to the trouble to make something, might as well make enough for another meal. It takes about the same amount of time.

When DH isn't here, I usually don't cook though.
:nervous:

Chrys, have you thought about putting left overs in those containers that are divided? You could freeze it in portions for one person.

I have tried that cooking extra for another day but the 2 teenage piranas that live here raid it before it hits the freezer.
It is hard to judge the amounts sometimes we are often like Aimee either too much or too little.
My pet peeve is getting everyone to write up on the shopping list what they have used so that I replace it when I do the shopping
I have been on strike lately ie not checking the cupboards and only buying what is on the list . The message is filtering thru' even to me who has been know to "forget"

well I HAVE thought about leftovers, but I never make enough FOR leftovers....I don't make or eat chili and the only soup I eat comes out of a can...I gotta say I'm not really much of a cook....I'm tried of all the packages of stuff that comes too large...tortillas, hotdogs, things like that....:whacky:

There are times when I am wondering around the supermarket thinking, " If only there was another animal..."
I'm peeved that the only butcher in town has just closed and the that only greengrocer shut 2 monthes ago. We have a weds market - not muuch good if you work and then run away at 2 o'clock. ( Town is 14,000 people) we have a lot of estate agents though.

our just hold the door open and let it walk away.

My pet peeve about the crisper is you buy a bag of pre cut salad and it looks fresh you open the bag and by the time dinner is over it is more brown then your hard wood floors.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Aimee, that is so true!! My rule is that if it has turned green, grown a "fur" coat or can walk it should not be in the fridge.....
