I am making a quilt, but my needles keep breaking. What am I doing wrong?

Most of the time, one of your hands is sneaking around behind the needle, intending to just keep the fabric snug, but accidentally pulling on the fabric, just enough to pull the needle out of line to where it hits and is broken off. NOBODY thinks they are doing this, but if their hands are not allowed "around back", the problem stops.

Once you know that this is what is causing it, it is possible to learn to hold the fabric slightly extended with both hands at once, front and back, but you MUST NOT help it feed.

Bill, you are right, I think I probably do pull on the fabric unintentionally. Thank you so much, this was costing me a fortune in needles, and making me MAD!!!

I am putting you on a pedestal, because in about 35 years in the business, I believe I never had someone acknowledge that they were guilty on my first suggestion! Congratulations!

and of course, the worst thing is, when you've broken one needle you might have actually knocked the machine's timing out, resulting in more breakages...
