I am learning how to sew and have decided to line the coat I am working on.....I am stuck and don't know how to line it as the pattern I bought does not include these instructions (it was a last minute decision on my part!).

I need step-by step instructions as to how to do it...right now I have cut out the pattern for the coat as well as the lining (same peices just different fabric)...I just don't know how to put the pieces together sew it properly as I have a tried a few times and I keep doing it wrong. There must be a way to do it without the lining on the outside of the coat!!

Can someone point me in the right direction?

When I line a coat that is not intended to be lined I make a second "coat" out of the linning fabric leaving an 8 inch opening on one of the side seams then i omit any facings and sew the two coats together and then turn right side out through the opening in the lining and hand stitch that area closed.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Thanks Aimee........I also am making a fleece coat for my GD and the advise of leaving an opening is great and I will certainly try that. The last coat I did it but I sure went about it the hard way.

Is this a bomber style jacket or a straight cut? Zipper or button? Ribbing on end of sleeves or turn under?

It is a straight coat I am making for my grand daughter, it has long sleeves and a collar. I just went ahead and made the lining and then stitched it to the collar seam and will tack it at the shoulder and side. It seems to be working so will just finish up. Thanks for answering.

Seeing as you have managed so far this is just food for thought for next time. Lenghten the sleeves and bottom of jacket for turn ups to fix lining to. Use the front facings of the jacket and attatch them to the front edges of the lining, finish sew the long edges of the front facings before sewing to lining. Also on the centre back fold of the lining, add an inch or so to make a ease pleat. Instead of making the jacket body longer you could make a facing for the bottom of the jacket and sew it to the lining as well. Something to think about anyway. You could also sew the upper collar to the lining.

thanks again I will make a copy of this so the next time it will be easier. I seem to always go about things the hard way. Anyway I finished sewing the buttons on tonight and it is finished.
I use hook and loop as it is easier for my GD to close the coat.
