Please help me - I am very frustrated. I need some advise. My stitches on top look great. The stitches underneath are even however - it is very easy to pull the thread out. I know my machine is not balanced but can not figure out why. In the case that the top stitches look good which tension is usually off. I tried testing the top tension by tugging on the thread with the foot down (I get some resistance). I tried testing the bottom by holding the bobbin by the thread (like a spider web) and feel tension there. The underside looks like a straight thread ( thread from bottom) with short (top thread) intersecting horizontally. The thread from the top is much shorter length than the top thread.

Thanks, Cindy

Have you pulled out your sewing machine manual and seeing what it suggests? You didnt'mention what model your machine is.

to test your tension, take a piece of fabric and fold it on the bias. sew a line stictching 1/2" from fold, then pull the fabric on the fold until the thread breaks.

if the bobbin & the needle thread break, the tension is fine.
If only the bobbin thread breaks, that means the that bobbin tension is tighter then the needle tension; Solution, Tighten the needle tension to match the bobbin tension
If only the needle thread breaks, theat means the the needle tension is tighter than the bobbin tension. Solution; Loosen the needle tension to match the bobbin tension

I pulled this out of my copy of Simplicites Simply the Best Sewing Book

Good Luck
