Hi! I started a sewing class on Tuesday. We are making 2 hr bias skirts. The instructor took our measurements and said that we would need to enlarge my pattern to fit. She showed me some sort of thin white sheet with pinkish dots all over it and showed me how much it would need to be enlarged(an inch and something on each side?) ANYWAY, does anyone have a link that describes how you enlarge a pattern? I would like to read up on it before I go to class so I'm not totally clueless. Also, does anyone know what that white sheet is with all the polka dots? I wanted to get one from fabric store in case she wanted me to bring my own. Also, is this a very difficult process? I'm so embarrassed that I need to enlargement in the first place(the other two people in my class are young with belly rings..lol) so I would at least like to have a clue about what I'm doing. THANKS SO MUCH! Take care!
Cynthia

P.S. Just found this forum the other day and I love it. It is so informative. Thanks again!

Fitting is a pretty complicated process with much more to it than just adding along the seams in most cases. There is nothing wrong with your size, obviously she only has one size pattern which is too small for you. The paper you describe is probably some kind of pattern making paper with the dots being one inch marks or something.

For now it's probably best for you to focus on learning to handle the machine and fabric. I'm surprised she is starting with a bias piece as this is not the most basic thing to work on. Ask her if the fabric or cut pattern pieces will be hung to stretch out before getting sewn together as bias stretches and your seams will pucker if the fabric hangs after it's been sewn.

Lots of luck with your new skill. I'm sure you'll like it. Don't be surprised by frustrations along the way, everyone encounters them and the pleasures are worth sticking it out.

for the reply! :-) When she was going over the pattern with us I was thinking that it did not seem like a beginner piece. I will ask her if we are going to hang to pieces prior to sewing...

I have been practicing off and on today using the machine. It is so much fun. Today I worked on threading the machine, winding the bobbin, removing and placing it back etc. Then I practiced a few stitches and back stitches(or reverse stitches??..the ones you do at the end). It was fun. The only thing I could not figure out was how to get the automatic threader on my machine to work. Oh well..guess I will just keep threading it on my own. I can't wait to start working with the pattern next week.

Thanks again for your help. Take care!

I didn't know you were supposed to hang the pieces before they were sewn together. I thought you just hung the skirt after it was sewn and before you hemmed it.
