I am interested in finding what communitiy service projects are being done by other sewers and sewing groups. We have been doing two different projects during each year and I am looking for some other ideas that might be incorporated into our yearly projects.

Hi Cynret, and welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

We at this site have challenges where participants will donate things they have made to their favorite worthy cause. Some of these include womens shelters, hospitals with preemie wards, needy kids etc. We make quilts, chemo hats, baby clothes, etc.

As individuals we donate to needy kids, seniors and anyone who needs a helping hand. I donated to a womens shelter to homeless women with children. Many of the others donated to their local hospitals.

What projects have you participated in?

I participate in Project linus but I dont make the blankets. The jewish women collalition makes the blankets. I am one of the suppliers of scrap fabrics. I also make hats for kids in the cemo ward at out children's hospital. called caps for kids. My oldest also makes boxer shorts for boys that are his age at the hospital. It is his way cause when he was there no one helped out the older kids they always had gifts for the little kids. he was stuck in the hospital for a bone infection.

The other place I donate to is the Majorie Mason shelter for battered and displaced women and children. We donate clothing we have made and some might consider it shameful but we give last years Halloween costumes. We repair them and make sure it is in good repair. Some have critisized that I should make new ones then the boys old ones. but I can only do so much each year.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Hi, Our quilt guild makes "Cuddle quilts" which are about 35" wide and 49" long. These are very simple quilts - 7" squares, one plain, one print (kid friendly) and a soft backing. The guild gets funding from some service groups for material and we donate our time and thread. The completed quilts go to the police officers and ambulance attendants and are given out to any child (and sometimes the elderly or mentally challenged adult) when they are involved in car accident, fire or "domestic disturbance". The officers/ems have to sign out each quilt and record who received it - just to keep it all straight and above board.

We also made quilts to dontate to ChildCan which gives quilts to each child diagnosed with cancer, and each of their siblings, at Children's Hospital in London. Their is no funding for this, we do it on our own.

And we make small pillows and totes to carry them in for cancer patients undergoing chemo.

Hope these ideas are what you are looking for.

Don't worry about it, Aimee. I am sure the costumes are great, and very much appreciated by the excited children who get to wear them. Besides, most costumes only get worn once or twice...hardly even enough for it to be called 'used'! At least they are not going to waste in the back of your closet...*that* would be shameful!
Some people rent costumes, and I'm sure those ones have been worn a time or two... :bluewink:
Take care,
Donna

I see nothing wrong with passing down or around Halloween costumes either. My girls and I sure did and the kids that got them loved them.
My girls loved trick or treating but they weren't really big candy eaters so they picked out their favorites and we would donate the rest to a group home for challenged kids.

The projects I have participated in have been mittens for a children''s care agency and pillows for surgery patients at one of our local hospitals. I am interested in the chemo hats mentioned and am wondering where patterns for these are available. What material is used for these? fleece? Cynret
