I am making some warm undervests for my self, the fabric i got is beige ribbing of different widths in it.These should be nice and warm in winter months, the fabric reminded me of the old libery bodice's we wore as kids after the war.my question is this....what would be a good binding for the neck and armholes? as it does stretch if sewn and almost impossible to turn a hem, due to the stretch of it.self fabric woulnd't do at all or bias fabric of the same. Any ideas gals on this I just sewn the shoulders together using a piece of tape to strengthen them.I do have a serger also.I just need some input before racking my brains on this lol.thanks in advance ladies .

There is a fold-over elastic that is designed for this type of thing...you may see it on camisoles that are sold in the stores. I have seen it in white and black. If you can't find the appropriate colour, it may be 'dye-able'. Also, if you have some nice thread, like rayon(?), perhaps you can do a serged finish, without turning under. Take care,

I tried serging it but since its on a stretch grain, its near impossible to do that, perhaps the other method would be better that you suggested moses.Perhaps a T'shirt fabric would have done better, but i thought this would be warmer to wear.Thank you for your suggestion appreciated )

Some type of satin edging(ribbon?) might look very feminine, too.

I got some bias tape today, and it seems to help with the stretch factor,it doesn't have to be pretty no one sees it but me lol.But thats sounds like a nice idea, so perhaps i will add that later i have loads of scraps in lace.Thank you for your response.

When I have a stretchy fabric like that, sometimes i lay strips of waxed paper under it and that makes the feed dogs happier.. Have you ever tried that.. try it on a scrap, first..

Libby thanks for your idea,as a matter of fact I did place some scrap paper underneath, so the feed dogs wouldn't pull along with my walking foot too.

A lot of people use bathing suit fabric for bindings as well. Especially on fleeces, etc.
