I picked up my dd early from school yesterday because she had a headache. As she described her symptoms, I realized she was describing a classic migraine headache. She's never had one before. I asked if she wanted to go to the emergency room last night, but she said she wasn't that miserable. Today she feels fine. Since she's 12 year old, I'm wondering if this could be hormone related. Since I've never had a migraine headache, do any of you have any advice to share? I know there is medication available. Thanks. Raine |

Raine, I don't have direct experience with migraines, especially at that age. I have read of them being linked with hormones and I have also read of them occuring in kids. Do you have a doctor that you trust? I'd start there. Let us know what you find out. I've got a friend who's whole family gets migraines, even down to the 5 year old. Jill |

Yes, kids can have migraines. My daughter did too, and still gets them. I agree with jcook, take her to the doctor. Headaches are nothing to fool with. If there is no medical reason for them, may I suggest either a chiropractor or accupuncture? I have great results from both. I seldom get migraines myself anymore because when I feel my neck muscles getting tense and start getting minor headaches I head for the chiropractor. One treatment usually does it. It's not for everyone I know, but it works for me. Also, my worst migraines were triggered by not eating on time, believe it or not. I must have something to eat at regular intervals because my blood sugar will drop too low and start a headache and for some strange reason it doesn't rise properly when I eat. I have learned the hard way to eat on time. Perhaps your daughter didn't eat lunch or skipped breakfast? Good luck I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

I have had Migranes since I was 8. Take her to the doctor. Maybe not the emergency room. There are many things that can cause Migraines and they have differnt degrees. Mine is caused by the foods I eat. We have found through an eating journal that mine are mostly caused by red meat not cooked well enough. You can have beef cooked thouroly but still have the red bloody type meat. Growing up on a Cattle ranch we at most of our beef rare. through the journal and cooking the meat til there is no red in it I have cut my migranes to once to twice in a 6 month period. If she is haveing the blinding Migraine to where she cant see and the light and noise causes vomiting then take her to the hospital other then that they suggest seeing a general doctor at a regular appointment. The new excederin Migraine medicine does help minimize teh effect when I feel one coming on. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Raine, There are a number of possible triggers for migraines, and they can vary from person to person. The triggers include hormonal changes, emotions, stress, food, smells, lighting, and so on. I guess the only way to determine the triggers for your daughter would be to observe and keep track of the surrounding circumstances. There are OTC drugs available, but since your daughter is very young, I would definitely consult with your family doctor first. Take care,

I have only ever had true migraine twice(thankfully) and it can be so disabling. Your daughter is young, I would get the doctor to check her out. My mum also has severe migraines - her doctor advised she keep a food diary i.e. recording what she ate every day for several weeks and logging the migraines, to see if any particular food was causing them. She found that it was red cheese that seemed to trigger them The causes /triggers are different for different individuals. See what your doctor advises.

Chocolate, cheese, red wine and red meat are all known triggers of migraine - I assume so is getting visual syptoms as well as the headaches otherwise by devinition it is not a migraine but just a bad headache. Does she react to oranges or have bad tummy aches when she was smaller - sometimes young kids get 'tummy migraines' which translate into the other variety as they grow. The whole hormonal thing is a possible trigger - as it can affect your blood sugar levels as Mamahoogie said that can be nasty. Eating little and often , grazing, a few days before a period and eating complex carbos might help even that out. You didn't say whether she had started her periods yet or were you thinking as a general grrowth thing? love and kisses, Jan

How dumb of me. When I answered I totally forgot food allergies. If I eat anything with nutmeg in it, or MSG, or drink even a bit of wine I get an immediate migraine. Yes, a food journal is essential if it's allergy related. I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. Yes, Aimee, she did have the visual blinding and throwing up. She did say she had a hamburger for lunch, but the headache had started before then--about 10 AM. She doesn't usually eat breakfast at all; I will have to make a point of having her eat at least a little something in the morning. She felt much better on Saturday; I'll have to make an appt. with our family doctor to see what's up. Raine |

Mamahoogie, I brought dd to the chiropractor yesterday. We'll see if it helps (I'm keeping my fingers crossed.) I visit the chiropractor every month for my TMJ syndrome headaches. I don't know what I would do without him. Thanks. Raine |

I get migraines quite often. They are most guaranteed during my monthly period. I have to be careful with chocolate. The Excederin Migraine works well. Wal-mart has their brand of the same medication and it works just as well but a lot cheaper. I've suffered headaches as long as I can remember. I wish your daughter well. |

Hope the chiropracter can help. I know he does with mine. He also gives me laser accupuncture for my sinuses and what a help that was. Painless procedure and headaches all but disappeared. kylefty - right on about the monthly headaches. It's been a few years since I've had those (the big M, you know) but I remember my husband pointing out to me just the last couple of years that I was getting bad headaches that time of the month. Must have been getting ready for the big change. Can't complain, never had a cramp and had 3 kids with no morning sickness..but those darn headaches made up for it. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.
