Okay..still working on my first sewing project. I started doing the french seams on the sides last night. Everything was going fine at first. Then at the very end of the second seam (you know after you flip it over.press and do the second one) I turned it to the right side and realized that at the very bottom some of the raw edges are peeking out right in the center. The rest looks absolutely beautiful. So I ripped the seams out and did it over. I originally thought it was because my sewing was not completely straight towards the end. However, that did not fix the problem. Then I thought maybe I did not press it good enought so I pressed it again and then tried again. It looked better but I still have some sticking out. tried to clip it with scissors but did not get all of it. What am I doing wrong? I measured from the needle to fabric edge before putting seam. My teacher told us to do 1/8" on the first hem and then 1/2" on the second one. Can't figure out the problem. Just getting frustrated because the rest looks nice. I was totally exhausted when I stopped last night so I will give it another try in a little while now that I'm not so tired. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cynthia

P.S. Also the fabric was bunching up like crazy while I was sewing. I am sewing rayon fabric and it is on the bias. Is that why? I have had the fabric hanging constantly over the past week......

You need to trim that first seam really close. I lay the seam over a seam roll and it is a lot easier to cut. And press it, First press as sewn (flat) then open, flip it and press the inside flat with the seam open, Trim and press flat with right sides together. I know it sounds like a lot of pressing but it is worth it. French seams do take longer -- a lot longer really -- but they look that much better. I think.

Cynthia, you are doing just fine. Dorothy is giving you some very good advice.

When you are done, your garment will look as good on the inside as it does on the outside. :bluesmile
