I have used McCalls, Butterick, New Look, and Burda patterns. They were all easy patterns. |

I got the KwiK Sew for Children book and used a pattern out of there that I really liked. Sherri My website

I too used the kwik sew book when I made the dg's jackets but I made them longer in the body as I think little kids jackets are just too short. |

Ditto on the Kwik Sew. Most times that is the only patterns I use for my kids.

On shirley Adams' website there is a free pattern for a child's fleece coat. I think she calls it a "heartfelt" jacket. She suggests it as a quick and easy jacket for a sewing group to make as a community service project. My mom and I bought a Malden Mills remnant bundle (30 yds) and she is going to use her share to teach her church group to make these. It is basically a bog coat. I downloaded the instructions from her web page and made one for my DGD from scraps left over from my bath robe. Chile Pepper Chile Pepper from Texas

I was on that site just a couple of days ago and noticed that coat. Such a good idea. You don't hear about Shirley in this area of the country at all. MaryW

Mary, As far as I know, Shirley is not making any more programs. What a loss!!! I'm tempted to spend the money to get some of her videos. I really like her teaching concepts. She was a couple of the Expos this yr, Chantilly,VA and Novi, MI. I would definitely go to any presentation she were to make within a 5 hour drive. Lala Chile Pepper from Texas

I too miss Shirley Adams program, she gave me alot of confidence from her T.V. shows. I did buy some of her books but must confess haven't really used them much. Some how you just get sewing the things you know and in a rush and I don't take the time to put different concepts into practise, but when I make a boo-boo these days I just expand on it and pass it off as a suppose to be thing. |

I have to add my 2 cents worth here.. I ran across the first program of Shirley Adams First series by accident on PBS Years and years ago.. From that day to this I was a devoted fan and student.. She ended up having 17 series of 13 shows each, and I don't think I ever missed but 4 of them altogether.. That is over 200 shows.. She is the GREATEST TEACHER in my humble opinion.. She taught for years at the university level.. If you ever get the chance to see her, Go, you will never regret it.. She taught me things I spout about on here frequently.. Testing new products before using, experiment with notions before making your garment, etc...She is so knowledgable...I have a lot of her shows on tape. because I had to tape a lot of them when I worked my second job doing Income Tax returns all those years, because they made me work on Saturdays, and that is when she was on the TV.. I am so glad I kept them...She is the worlds greatest teacher in my opinion..

Well, that is quite an endorsement! I have never seen her much but I did hear about her quitting the shows. She said she didn't have time and that a lot of other well known sewing celebrities didn't actually sew themselves. They had others do all the work, while she did it all herself. At least that is what I read somewhere, maybe it was on her website. MaryW

I don't know how we do it but every post we start goes off on another tangent. Just wanted to say that I am making those bog coats for all my kids. I finished my first one last night and all I can say is WOW! I'll be making those for eveyone who needs a new jacket. Maybe even myself. Does anyone know if this pattern will work with busty women?
