I am sewing a skirt for the first time going by your lessons Mary (thanks). It's a 4 gore and I have just sewn the center seams together and now have 2 pieces. At what point do I check the fit? And what do I do if it's too big? I've quilted but never sewn clothes before. |

I would sew all the gores together then I would try it on for fit; take in gore seams if too big; sew smaller seams in gores if too small. Patsy Patsy

The easiest way is to pin fit. Pin your seams together, try on, adjust pins as needed, then sew. Since you already have it partially sewn see if you can get a good fit with the seams that remain. Once you've sewn a seam it's much harder to rip out. If you prefer you can baste first, either by hand using long stitches, or by machine using the longest stitch your machine will make. |

Thanks for the help so far but I didn't mention the skirt is a pull on w/elastic. oops. So do I adjust it now in the seams or wait until I put the elastic in? I think I want more folds than a 4 gore is designed for so if I wait til I put the elastic in won't that give it more folds? |

The only adjustment you can make now is in the hips, but if you want it fuller with more folds then leave it as large as possible. An elastic waist has to be left large enough to pull over the hips regardless of how full you make the skirt. |
