I have a lovely Battenburg tablecloth. I put it on my dining room table once in a while and it looks lovely. But, before too long someone spills something on it, or it gets covered up with books, bills, etc, etc. At any rate, it is hard to take care of and keep nice. But, I got this idea and want to know what you girls think of it. I want to hang the tablecloth from the ceiling in my bedroom and use it for a canopy over our bed. Four little hooks in the ceiling and chains hang down to hook into dowelling. I could make a casing on each long side, push the dowel thru and let it hang. Kind of a Victorian type of look. The four corners of the tablecloth are very ornate and fancy. I think it might look really neat. MaryW

Hanging a frame from the ceiling with a canopy is a very 'now' way of creating a fourposter bed look - are you going to have to redecorate the whole room? sounds good to me. Would you apply a casing to the cloth and slide the dowelling through those for the hooks to attach to or simply hang the dowelling rods and drape the fabric over? The latter is ultimately less stress on the fabric and you could make a few other canopies for rinfinf the changes with very little effort. love and kisses, Jan

I think I would create the casings. If I open the window my canopy would end up out in the hall if I just hung it over. LOL.

I had a glass top cut for my table and put that over the table cloths to protect them and keep them looking new. When I have guests I remove the glass and hide it in a closet. Or for casual diing I just leave the glass on. Hope this helps someone... |

Sounds very nice. I love battenburg. I decided against the canopy idea for now. It is far too narrow for our king sized bed. I forgot that little detail when I was being so creative. I am going to make use of it somehow. It is such a waste, just folded up in a closet. Any ideas ladies? MaryW

I think the canopy idea is really great. If your bed is too wide for the table cloth, try putting the canopy over a wrought iron settee (or even wicker) for a very romantic look. You can put it in your sun room, or near a bay window/french door. Agood book in hand, some coooold iced-tea, warm sun streaming down the windows... I think it will look really pretty... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mary, that canopy is a great idea---I was thinking of a small canopy over my single bed--when I moved into an apartment I got rid of the big bed. I need to make my Battenberg tablecloth an ivory color to match my new bedskirt and pillowcases and the background of my new quilt, then get some brackets or maybe a thing I saw in a catalog. It is black wrought iron and fastens to the wall and you drape your canopy over it; it sticks out about a foot from the wall over the head of your bed. Then I have to decide what I'll do with the 10 or 12 napkins that came with the tablecloth....no, I didn't do the cloth myself, but I do have a 40" Battenberg square I did for my oval glass dining-table. I did it on the machine. I may have described the technique in one of the machine embroidery articles, I don't remember. I am back in Bastrop now, about 24 miles east of Austin...I liked Friendswood a lot, but two of my daughters are in Bastrop and Austin and wanted me to move back, even found my apartment (a bigger one) for me! I don't know if your tablecloth is round or rectangle or a sq. I saw someone use hers for a valance . She just hung it over the rod. Looked really nice. |

Mary, I love the battenburg. I have a set for our bed. DD just loved mom's and mom couldnt aford one for DD. Had a lovely tablecloth I did not use much so I got a good quality percale sheet and sewed them togeather for DD's duvet. Have inexpensive plain colored covers, put the lace one over top, lovely! the lace shows enough color and the effect is real pretty. |

My Battenberg tablecloth is a large oval, over a 100" long and I forget how wide, but more than 50", and I think I will get the wrought iron thing to hang it over. I may tea-dye it, or use ivory dye, but oh, how I hate the thought of ironing it! I think I will see if I can find someone to do that before I start! My 40" square one on my oval glass table is white, but my bedskirt and pillow shams are ivory and the quilt is ivory, with pink embroidered roses with green embroidered leaves and celadon green binding around the scalloped edges, so I don't want white draped above the headboard. My furniture is antique white, that is the same as ivory. I love stitching Battenberg designs. MariLynntx

I was just wondering what Mary W did with her tablecloth? Did you tell us? I did not realize you posted the question so long ago, I am pretty slow on this computer. |
