Hello! I am about to attempt to make a large pillow, about 24 x 30", with a cover which can be zipped on and off. I have never put a zipper in and am wondering if there are special zippers for clothing and different zippers for pillows and upholstry? I'm totally clueless on this! Any help on which kind to buy and even tips on inserting the zipper would be greatly appreciated! -Genevieve -Genevieve

I see you agree on the removeable cover I suggested in the other thread. There are different weights of zippers and I think the heaviest one you can find would be best. Metal teeth will hold up better to the compression from the dog''s weight than nylon coils. Your challenge will be finding one long enough, but if you can't you can use two zippers half the length and place them so the openings are both in the center of the edge/side of the pillow. Sew the zipper(s) onto the two rectangles first, then open it up enough to allow for turning right side out. Sew the other three edges with the right sides of the fabric facing and turn right side out. I think there is a zipper lesson on this site. If not another good place to look is about.com where they usually have great illustrations. |

Hello! When you say sew the zipper to the 2 rectangles first, then open it up enough to turn right side out, do you mean open the zipper enough? Does this mean the zipper should be sewn in closed, or "zipped up"? Thanks! -Genevieve -Genevieve

Yes, sew the zipper into place closed so you can meet the finished edges over it. You have to open the zipper to be able to turn the pillow once all sides are sewn. Usually when you make a pillow you leave part of one seam open and hand stitch it together after turning right side out. Your zipper won't take up the entire edge so you'll have to sew a around the two corners of the zipper side and a small amount of that seam to either side of the zipper. Do those ends first so the seam lies smoothly next to the zipper ends. I like to baste the entire seam closed loosely to keep it straight over the zipper. I hope I've explained this so you can follow, it's so much easier to demonstrate. |
