An idea I have used with children - cut the top off an old coke can and spray the outside of the can silver or gold. Cut strips (can use tin snips or I used kitchen scissors ) about 1-2 cms apart 2/3 way down the foil tin. Roll the strip around a pencil to make a curl down the outside of the tin. You end up with a shiny metal cup with petals curled outwards from it into which you can place a nightlight/tealight. Be careful as the edges are sharp.

Place these along the mantlepiece in green foliage, light the candles, turn down the lights and admire!

I also pick loads of sprays of greenstuff, flower heads , ivy and so on from the hedgerows and spray some of the silver. Then using an old coffee jar lid I put a lump of salt dough into the middle of the upturned lid. (They are often red, gold or green plastic) Shove a candle into the middle and put greestuff and pretty bits around the outside laying flat over the dough. Makes a really nice table decoration made by the kids. we do these year on year and they last far longer than the candle!

Apart from the tree that is about it for me - I do like my green stuff on the mantle.

I have greenery boughs over my windows and doorways. I hang one large coloured Christmas ball down from the middle of each of my windows. It looks really pretty when the sun shines on them.

For those of you in need of a quick tree skirt here is one I saw. Buy about 8 yds. of the real cheap stiff tulle. Gather it along one long edge and lay it so it encircles your tree. Secure the ends and you're done.

Marge: Saltdough for beginners -
You need two cups of plain flour with one cup of salt and one scant cup of tepid water. Combine dry ingedients in a large bowl adding half the water and mix with a wooden spoon, gradually add more water until you have a firm dough that is not too wet. Knead it for 10 minutes to release the gluten and it becomes quite elastic. Leave to rest at room temp for 30 mins. Roll it out to make all sorts of decorations - my daughter is planning to make cow fridge magnets. The dough can be placed on a baking sheet with a layer of non stick parchment and baked on a low shelf in the oven (120C /250F/gas1-2). When baked turn off the oven and allow to cool in the oven to complete the drying process.

Finished items can be painted with acrylic or watercolour paints and varnished. You can make 3D items if you part bake and add to them, to build up the shapes. We have made christmas tree decoration, wall plaques, wreaths and so on. I made a plaque for my kitchen of Sunflowers using cloves for the centre of the flowers - it looked great. The dough takes indentations well so you can create a lot of surface texture with toothbrushes, cocktail sticks and so on. It is a wonderful craft to do with children - it's a bit like baking playdo.

For the candle holders though I use the dough prebaking - as a form of oasis - I have found that greenery lasts for ages and if the whole arrangement goes wrong for the kids then can pull it all out, squish the stuff into a ball and start again.
