I've been sewing for years and am just now getting around to asking this question! I'm ready to cut a skirt out of a thin wale corduroy and I don't know which direction the nap is supposed to run? Do I cut the patterns with the soft direction going down my skirt or with it going up? I've always cut it so that it would be soft when I would run my hands down, but now I'm wondering if that is right, or if there even IS a right, as long as all pieces go the same direction! Thanks!!!

I have always cut it with the soft direction going down, also.

Me three. Just makes more sense since you're likely to run your hands on it that direction and it seems less likely to get snagged with the roughness facing down.

Just in time! I was ready to cut out my skirt and checked my mail and you both had the same idea as I did, so I'll do it soft side down. Thanks!!

When the nap runs down, it is softer and lighter in tone. If the nap runs up, the fabric looks richer. Pay attention to how the light reflects on the fabric.

Which ever way you cut out just make sure all pieces running the same way. I've sewn for years and years and just recently made a vest and skirt suit for a DGD and didn't notice until she had the suit on that one piece was wrong. Stuck out like a sore thumb. DD hadn't noticed it either. Glad DGD is young enough not to really care about it.:bg:

All these replies about nap got me to remembering that the reason I always sewed with the nap down is because it repels water/wet stuff better. How's that for a silly reason?
