has anyone made or thought about going out and getting a nice plain top and adding christmas material to the bottom for a skirt affect, someone told me they did this and i thought it would be so cute for my 8 yr old daughter that hates dresses to have a shirt she likes and turn it into a christmas dress??? i bought some christmas fabric and haven't used it yet and thought about doing this, anyone tried it? would you measure the bottom of the shirt then double the fabric to be added? or how would you all go about doing this? it sounded easy enough to me but, now i'm not sure :bang:

Marge,

I've done this quite a bit for my daughter, who is the opposite of yours and has always loved dresses. I'd do some up this way for her to get a bit of variety more quickly than I could put them together. I did some quick nightgownns for her and also did some sweatshirts that were embellished and added a double thickness of fabric to the bottom so the weight was more balanced. That worked out so nicely that I ended up doing the rest that way, didn't need too much more fabric and she didn't need a slip (try to find one these days!). I found out that on a heavier weight fabric, a double width gather was a little bit too much and that probably 1 1/2 would have been better. It was always quicker for me to just double it so that is still what I do, shame on me!

You suggestion is fine except if your dtr hates dresses it's likely a waste of time. I had one dtr like that too and one who loved dresses. :whacky: Kids!
Anyway, why not make the dress hating dtr a Christmas vest or decorate a shirt or sweatshirt with iron-on transfer Christmas design???
Just a suggestion.

Easy to do and so very cute.....I do the exact same thing except as I have mentioned before, I mostly sew for dolls but I do this all the time for my doll dresses. Just recently I bought a whole bunch of little girls stretch tops in three different styles (summer type) and in solid colors for 50 cents each. I then went through my stash and picked out matching fabrics for the skirts They have been big sellers for me during this Christmas selling season and turned out so cute...They are easy to do and I more than get my money back for the 50 cents spent for the top. While I didn't do any Christmas fabrics the idea is the same...If you would like to see one of my dresses I will post a link....You can use any type of top, knit T, sweat shirt or even a blouse .......

Here is one of my dresses...I did it in several colors. This harlequin I did in black and also in pink...they were the most popular....

I used to make these all of the time when my Dd was little. I always made them for summer with matching shorts. Now she is 12 and only likes skirts or pants. No dresses. I wish I had a Grand daughter to sew for but Dd says no more & others aren't ready yet. I guess I will have to make some for Great nieces instead.

Big mama, you must get a lot of doll clothes out of a child's top. Lovely Barbie dress by the way. Very elegant!

Thank you Mary.....It really depends on the top but I usually use them for the large My Size Barbie so I make mostly one top per shirt....There are always scraps that I might use but mostly I get one top for one piece bought. I don't buy them though unless they are on sale at a very good price or I expect to get a big price for the outfit..I have to make part of my money going in to the project by getting a good fabric at a great price....

Yes Mary I have seen that site and I buy all the dolls I can find. I belong to some Barbie groups and we do Barbies for underpriviledged little girls. It is a lot of fun knowing that you are putting smiles on some little girls face...
