Need some help here. I am putting elastic on the neckline of a skating dress,(the kind you pull on) have used 3/8" elastic as required by pattern and zig-zagged it on the wrong side of the material and then turned it down and zig-zagged it again, but the elastic wants to turn to the right side of the fabric and hangs wrong. What am I doing wrong? Would it matter which edge of the elastic that I zig-zagged first? On the edge of the material and elastic( outside edge) or the inside edge, or centre? If I shortened up the elastic would that make a difference? I quartered both the fabric and elastic when I put it on but something is not working right. What about using the clear elastic, would that help?

I hate this skating dress. It's been one major pain and still in process. I'm going to give it up for the night and try again in the morning.

Your elastic is probably too thick and stiff and pulling the fabric to conform to it instead of the other way around. Lingerie or clear elastic should work better.

Do some test samples with scraps of different elastic and your fabric in curved lines, see which looks best before you put it on the neckline. It's not going to be easy to get those stitches out without ripping that thin stretchy fabric. Snip each one and pull out with tweezers working on the elastic side of the stitching.

If you use the clear elastic and IF you have not used it before, please take note of this warning.. take it in your hands first and stretch it out two or three times before you begin to sew it.. It is wonderful stuff, but the first time I stitched it , I didn't stretch it first, and it snapped in half when I stretched it to sew..Next time i worked it a little bit first and it worked beautifully..
