My best friend's having a baby (due in a couple of weeks). I'd really like to giver her some nice things for the baby. (She had a baby shower and I gave her a complete bath set, tub, towel, bath toys, baby soap shampoo and lotion.. you know the works)My problem? I am new to sewing and can't do complicated stuff

What should I make for her? Do you think trying to make a hooded towel is complicated???

Hooded towel-- I think these are the easiest things to make. I just take a regular sized bathtowel & cut it to the appropriate size, then use the remainder to make the hood part. finish with your serger or bias tape. EASY.

Dorothy, where do you get your garment fabrics?

Another question. I have absolutely no idea how big New York City is, but I will be there the second week of January. We are staying at the Plaza Hotel. Do you know of any fabric stores around there? Like I say, I don't have a good clue, maybe I will be 20 miles from a fabric outlet.

Mary I am a NYC native and know the fabric shopping there pretty well.

Distances are by number of blocks, time and travel mode, miles aren't even considered.

There was a recent extensive thread on this topic in the Gatherings forum of the Threads magazine site recently, how about you start with reading that and I can give more info if you need it.

I buy my fabric on-line at www.fabric.com. Stephen (so dearly called Evil Stephen on my sergers group) has great service and are wonderful to deal with. :bg:

Mary--
Here are the directions I followed to find the most wonderful place on earth --
"It's an area located between Broadway and 7th Ave from south of Times Square and West 42nd Street to West 34th St."
Once you get to Times Square you cant miss the giant button at the gateway to the garment district.
Go Mary! Don't miss it. You may have to ship boxes of fabric home if you are flying or if they don't fit in your car. There are great bargains and wonderful, wonderful shops.
It is the first thing I want to do when we go to visit my daughter.

On line I often buy from EQuilter -- they have lots of fabric, not just cotton and cool buttons.
Fashion Fabric Club has good prices.
Threads Magazine has a great link page for more sources.

A bunting bag is fairly easy and there are some really nice fleeces available. There is one that looks like a star on the market and is really cute.
