Hi everyone, I need some advice. My husband wanted something 'Texas' (we've lived here two years now), so I decided to try to make this shirt. http://www.sheplers.com/item.cfm?TID=011507&DI=092284&SOURCE=DEALTIME_MensClothing The problem is that I used a pattern that doesn't have a separate placket piece. I thought this was fine until I realized(after the shirt is complete except for buttonholes and buttons) that his shirt is supposed to have the buttonholes on the left side. So, if I stick with convention, I will have to put the buttonholes on the red/white side. I'm not sure that the overall look will be 'right'. On the other hand, if I put them on the blue side, it might look odd, like he's wearing a 'women's' shirt. What do you think I should do? I want to add that the picture I'm pointing to is not the one I used...I wish it were, because it is very clear how the placket should be...I don't want you all to think that I'm a complete dunderhead... By the way, this is one of the few projects that I really feel good about. I really took my time, and was very careful(except for that huge oversight ). I did such a good job on it...he will have to wear it, one way or the other! LOL Take care,

I think I'd put the buttonholes on the red and white side. Otherwise his fingers might get tied in knots when he tries to button it. Most men I know wouldn't wear it much otherwise. I think you could make a placket and just lay it over the red and white side -- may be just a tiny bit past the edge so the red and white doesn't peek out. Use very thin interfacing and topstitch very close to both edges. Dorothy |

Donna, I think it would look all right with the buttonholes on the red & white side. The shirt in the picture looks a little out of proportion to me anyway, the blue area looks to big. I can see a lot of places where I would have changed the look. Like I would have made the left sleeve white, or possibly white on top and red on the bottom so it lined up with the panels in the shirt but that is me. I have been told that I am a little crazy. Donna, Look at the American flag shirt it looks fine with the red & white over the blue. http://www.sheplers.com/item.cfm?DI=092265 Gina

Thanks, ladies! I really appreciate your input. Dorothy, I thought about 'adding' a placket(maybe using the buttonhole guide as a starting point), but I worry about ruining all of my hard work... I looked again at the flag, and the white/red side is wider, so I think the shirt will be fine, as is. My husband is out this morning, so I got the shirt out and took a good look at it...You ladies are right...it looks okay with the red/white side overlapping. I guess I was tied too much to what I thought it was supposed to look like. Gina, I think it would be neat to make the sleeves 2-tone, but I didn't want to complicate things further for myself. It was difficult keeping all of the pieces/colours straight! As it was, I cut the sleeves out backwards! Luckily, they were basically symmetrical at the shoulder...I had to recut the bottom, to make sure that the plackets were in the right place...that would have been comical(in a maddening sort of way). I caught that booboo before I sewed anything together...thank goodness. Thanks again! Take care,
