My husband has a coat that needs a zipper replaced....can anyone give a beginner pointers on how to go about it? Will regular sewing machines handle the thicker fabric, or would we be better off finding a shop that does zipper repair? Thanks for any input! |

My personal thought is to take it to someone else, especially if it is a winter coat. I have replaced them but some times with a lot of ripping out and re-doing. I likely stretch the fabric when I take the zipper out and have a really hard time trying to get the 2 sides to align properly. When I do replace a zipper I usually open up the bottom or one of the inside seams so I can turn the coat inside out work on it so the zipper seam will be on the inside as it was originally made. Some times the last seam sewed will be inside one of the sleeves. When I pin the zipper in place I place the jacket flat on the table and pin it in one side at a time, sew that seam and then pin in the other side of the zipper paying attention to matching any topstitching and things like that from the side already sewn in to the one you are pinning in. Hope this helps you and am sure some one else has some better instructions for you. |

Most dry cleaners will replace a zipper for you if you don't have the confidence. Welcome to Sew Whats New. MaryW

Thanks for your help! We ended up taking the coat with us when we visited my inlaws in KS over the holiday, and my MIL helped me put it in. She was just as happy as I was to tackle the project We got it in, and my husband is happy with it, so all is well. I was told by my MIL though, not to breathe a word of the project to her MIL, cuz she's the one that gets passed all the hard projects to, and if she found out we could do it, she wouldn't do it for us anymore! Thanks for the welcome too, I have been soaking up info on this site like a sponge! So much help here! Happy New Year! |
