We will be having some more beginner lessons in sewing in 2004. I have a few things planned, but first will be posting some information on getting acquainted with your machine.

One of the lesson plans will be on an unlined jacket and another will be a simple wrap skirt. These will not begin until March sometime. If you or someone you know is interested in these projects, let me know. :bluesmile

I think this is wonderful that you are offering these. I have tried to locate sewing classes in my area (SC) and there just aren't any around. I have sewn off and on for years but it doesn't hurt to take a refresher course--plus I would love for my daughter to learn to sew--if nothing else than to make a few uniforms for herself. I'm too slow at sewing to keep her in clothes.

Finding a site that remembers that not everyone is an experienced sewist is very refreshing.

Thanks!:bg:

Sign me up. That seems to be the only way I actually get a project for myself finished - they usually end up in the "I'll get back to it next year pile which never seems to happen and I end up throwing it away cuz I don't remember what size or pattern I started with in the beginning and I lost the directions"

Brendalou:

I'm sometimes not the most organized person around but I've found that when I start a new sewing/quilting project if I get a 1 or 2 gallon (2 gallon seems to work best) zip loc bag and once I have my pattern, fabric, notions, etc. assembled for the project I just keep it all together in that bag then when I go back to it, it's still all together.

I am interested in the unlined jacket especially... I need a new one of those... Well, maybe I want a new one of those... Ha !
I really have been searching for a short jacket with some type of collar. (preferable a mandarin collar) I saw one in a rtw ad and it was beautiful, but they did not have my size..Just my luck..

Hey Mary! Glad to hear that you had a great Christmas. I was on vacation (West Virginia) Dec. 18 - 23rd and since then I've been home sick with this respiratory bug that someone so graciously shared with me.

Hi Mary,
May I recommend McCall's pattern #3792 for an unlined jacket. It is easy and is a classic fit that comes multi-sized (8 - 22). It's called a 2 Hour project and can be made up in wool, wool blends, fleece, corduroy, synthetic suede or border prints. One can even use contrasting fabrics for collar and pocket bands. It's one of my favorites for a quick outer jacket. Happy Stitching! Marty

I've had a look at this pattern - looks ideal for us beginners! What do you think, Mary? I really want to follow these lessons - I'm moving to my new house ( with a sewing room!) on 6th Feb. so I will (hopefully) be unpacked and ready to go when these lessons start. Thank you for this, Mary!

Mary,
Please include me too for this new beginner's sewing lesson. I have tried Lesson 1 and my skirt turned out Ok, but I need more practice.

A simple unlined jacket would be great. Thank you for a great New Year idea. Looking forward to this project.

Hi Mary & everyone! I am new here and well, you can say new to sewing it's been so long- at any rate, how would these "on-line" lessons work? I have been reading over the "sewing lessons" on the forum channels and there is some great info there- would this be done similar or what? I am afraid I may need some "extra" attention to begin again- LOL My main problem (I am thinking) is trying to "rush" back into it- I need a good refresher but want to know all there is to know at once ratherthan waiting- LOL I am not impatient, but do hope to get versed in all I would like to be able to sew- and soon. Thx for any info and if this won't start til about March, I may have to get in-

Please add me to the list. It sounds like fun and we have to wear jackets to work if we wear pants. I could use a jacket so I don't have to wear dresses and skirsts all the time.

This lesson will not be posted today. The site has been readied for a move to a new server. This will take place this weekend if all goes well. In the meantime, there will be no new content added until the move is complete.

If you notice missing posts or anything erratic on the site, this is probably the reason. It is a huge job and there is an awful lot of work being done behind the scenes. It's like moving your sewing room after 6 years. LOL

Buttonholes are something that I cannot give you step-by-step instructions for. Each machine has its own foot for these. If all else fails, you can always use velcro. :bluesmile

drlmull, welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

Making garments for yourself is fun and it can be frustrating. If you just follow the step by step instructions and ask lots of questions here I'm sure you can handle it.

Your clothes are just longer seams and more fabric. :bluewink:

I've been looking for the wrap around skirt lesson for a while and forgot where it was. Want to join. I have had some material for a few yrs and wanted to make a skirt but just didn't get around to it. Can't wait to get started.

The material I have needs to be lined though, which I also have. Mary do you have any suggestions, or anyone else. Would love to do it with this skirt.

A wrap skirt has the front overlap, I don't think it is really a good candidate for lining.

Hi lizpaye,

With 4 yards, I think you'll be able to make 3 skirts! :bg: If I understood the directions given, you will need 48 inches of fabric, which is approximately 1 1/3 yards. I would buy a little more, just to be on the safe side...maybe 1 1/2 yards.
Take care,
Donna

Lizpaye,
I think you are confusing 4 feet with 4 yards.. 48 inches is equal to 4 feet .. There are 3 feet in 1 yard... so, as she said 48 inches equals 1 & 1/3 yards..

Hi I have been following this thread and have enjoyed it all. I am getting my sewing room set up again since moving and I am hoping to get back to sewing and I just loved the idea of the wrap skirt so I will give it a try. About one out of may things that I make acturally work out and I wear them. I sew for my grand daughter and do not have a problem so I guess it the pattern measurments that I have the problem with. I do keep trying lol
Thanks again I love this sight Nancy
