I have read a multitude of messages on this board about Dress Shop. I haven't seen much of anything about PatternMaster. Has anyone used PatternMaster and Dress Shop and able to comment on their preference between the two?

I signed up for a couple of the DS Sew Design programs last night--lingerie and fitted combo--and am awaiting my access code. However I'm curious about the PatternMaster program as well.

I appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

I have the dress shop pro. I got it cause you can do it for any one and not have to but the add ons for the differnt sizes.

I have only used the Wild things from Wild ginger. I like the way the regesister marks line up better then in the dress shop but other then that I have no real use of the programs.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

I did a quick look on Pattern Master, but I can't find any program by that name, maybe you mean Pattern Maker? Pattern Maker has been withdrawn from the market and can not be found. Wild Ginger is being shown on an episode of Marthas sewing room which I have not seen yet. But, I am planning to tape it this week. Dress shop is very expensive. Costing around 400 dollars and I even saw a price of 699. One can buy a lot of paper patterns for that price. It has many patterns that may be worth it, I just can't say, because I have not tried it.

I took a class where an experienced sewing teacher who had tried all the computer softwares showed the advantages and disadvantages of each. Her preference was Patternmaster Boutique (Wild Ginger) for several reasons I can't remember any more.

I bought the Version 2 but have really just started to use it for various reasons. It does take some learning and tweaking to get the right fit, even with this. The company offers excellent tech support, there is an emailed forum you can subscribe to, and the price is under $200.

You need to be familiar with computers to navigate around it and you must be able to sew without directions as it generates a pattern but no instructions.

They both have their advantages and their disadvantages. I am leaning toward DressShop for one reason only, there is NO option in PMB for a skirt with no closure! How utterly ridiculous.

I know I could print one out with the closure and then adjust the pattern to make one without it, but why should I have to?

Thank you for all your replies. I have purchased the Sew by Design fitted combo and lingerie package. I liked the number of measurements (I did the full measurements--didn't know I had that many angles and curves). I printed out a top and pant sloper last night but haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet.

I have also gone ahead on a limb and purchased the women's package of Patternmaster. I am desperate for decent fitting clothes. My time to sew is limited. I need all the help I can get to have patterns that fit without a lot of manipulation.

I read a lot of good things about PMB on another site and liked the fact a) it was cheaper than dress shop. I think Dress Shop would be great if I could afford the bigger packages. I enjoyed playing around with it. The Sew By Design packages are very limited. Their website has quite a few links that end up nowhere and the program needs some more tweaking too.

Anyway, once I get it all together, I will let you know which program produced the better fitting sloper--from there we will see.

I have a hard time getting a pattern to fit--my behind sticks out, front sticks out and the middle isn't that great either. RTW clothes are either too tight or too baggy--and that is the same size too. I've got to do something to look professional and working all week it is hard to find time to sew much less spend hours adjusting a package. So, I am crossing my fingers and saying a prayer that one of these packages will work so I can just sew!

Thanks folks for your responses.

Martha's sewing room is a pbs program, and if you search on the show there is a website with link to wild ginger as well. I am not sure what channel your local PBS is on, but if you do a search as well, the schudules will be online. Since I have tivo it tells me which episodes will be shown. I also found the sewing with nancy program helpful, also PBS because she shows how to alter a pattern with patten drafting paper by either adding or subtracting from the sides. I have taken a class in pattern drafting, but it very diffucult. I have found the less a pattern is altered the better, because the more change, the more risk of being off grain line or otherwise failing. I like to make a pattern in cheap material first if possible, then if the pattern is only slightly off, I can try to change it, but if it just not very good to begin with then I know before I waste expensive fabric.

Definitely join the Patternmasterchatter email group and also ask there about a user's group in your area. You'll learn a ton and have a great time socializing with other sewists.

I went to the wild ginger site, but could not see any link to the email group. Could you provide the url? I am a member of a pattern group in yahoo groups, but it is not very active, there are no replies since Nov. 2003.

The link is in the software manual, you will need your disc's registration number to join. In the version 2.0 manual it is under Free Software Updates and Chat List.

I see one has to buy the software first to join. I also suggest a site called pattern review, it also costs, but I have been on a free message broad there, but some features are for pay.

I have seen the program explaining the wild ginger, but I am not going to buy it because I am only working the knits at this point, and wild ginger does not do knits.

The dress shop does knits. If you select a pattern that is not normally for knits you go into the extra part of the pattern and adjust the ease of the fabric for that pattern. I have used ball gown patterns and adjusted for the ease of stretch velvet I used a minus 5 ease and it worked great.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

I've had both Dress Shop and Patternmaster Boutique, and PMB is so far and away better, I wouldn't try to compare them. I've had PMB over 2 years, and co-host our area Users Group.
Agree mostly with the posts from Stitchmd, but would firmly suggest one thing. You (and others) need V.3 and the latest update (4/1/06). There have been many additions and changes. You will find construction informa-
tion; there are settings for pull-on skirts and pants. You can draft any pattern for use with knits. You don't need any add-on to create a pattern for another person. Just enter measurements and create a measurement chart for any individual you want. Then create any design based on the person's chart.
Wild Things is just a small, free to owners, program for printing and sewing simple accessories. That is no example of drafting a pattern in PMB.
The Patternmaster Chat List has been replaced by a Forum which you can access through the Wild Ginger site.
Girls, PMB is a fine program, but you're all missing so-o-o much. It's almost like another program compared to V.2, and the updates every few months always add and tweak things.
Good luck.
