I think 16yr DD might have some of my genes:cool:
Firstly she had to clean out her bedroom to get her new stereo system in so out went alot of stuff but DH who was helping her helped her sort 2 boxes of fabric and organise the sewing patterns. When he and I were clearing out a large stoage cupboard over the weekend I rediscovered 2 boxes of fabric myself - it sort of slowed down the tiding process 'cause I just had to look thru' it all. In all honesty I have so much fabric I really should rationalise it and donate some to a local group of ladies that sew for charities But which piece it ALL might be useful ONE day !.
Yesterday DD and I went for a drive to another city for a bit of retail therapy and I actually managed to buy muyself 2 tops - only because my serger is in being serviced and I cant sew up the material I bought last week for some tops for work(I kind of fret when I dont have my machines) - I need something cool for the hot weather we have been having - great summer so far:bg: sorry ladies just had to say that knowing it is snowing where alot of you are. Anyway we had reached our endurance limit when I remebered that there is a must visit quilt shop just on the out skirts of town so off we went foot sore and weary.
Well she sort of was a bit like Tigger(of Winny the Pooh fame) bouncing around the store admiring all the quilts and patterns - one of which she bought - I was so busy watching her that I forgot to have a good look myself!
Anyway it is raining today so we went over to our local quilt store just to look at the fabric for her pattern. Well she has decided on flannel in very bright colours - my budget is blown she is washing the fabric as I write. Does this mean I will have to get another machine - I find myself queuing to use mine.
So she is buzzing and I am kind of pleased that she is interested and keen to do stuff like this - I have to say that she has a good eye for colour, tones etc. So I guess this Mum is buzzing a bit too:bg:

Fun isn't it Skye? My 20 year old will alk around with holes in her clothes and will throw them away before reaching for a needle.

My 17 year old has rediscovered Barbie - she wipes the faces off with white spirit, repaints and restores the hair and by soaking in hot water , you can reposition the arms and legs. Then she is dressing them to look like strange people! Her major project is to make one like the Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge. But she has also been asking if I will teach her garment sewing and we customised a skirt over Christmas!

Tight black Lycra 80's mini, now slit up the side seam and laced together with red ribbon and embellished with different sized circles of gauze, satin, leatherette in black and purple. She wears it with black and white stripy tights. I'm astonished at her nerve, and she looks great!

I'm now passing her bits of froth and lace as I find them for Barbie to wear...
you shols see My Gothic Barbie - scarey!

I have two girls and, like Jan's girls, one stitches and one doesn't. My oldest daughter and I enjoy shopping trips to fabric shops, quilt and other textile art stores and shows. My youngest just gets bored.
I suggest you encourage the sewer -- but hide your stash.

Gothic Barbie - interesting like to see a pic :)
DD had that fabric washed dried and ironed by last night. It is now cut out - she also learnt that rotary cutters are sharp and you bleed a bit. I hate it when my kids hurt themselves - she got the bandage on and went right on cutting out so she is keen I guess we all get knicked sooner or later.
Dorothy you are right it is really nice that a 16 year old still wants to do things with her Mum and that we both enjoy similar things - music ? maybe not:bg:

My sister and I were polar opposites on anything to do with homemaking. She hated all of it--including sewing (she did grow up to be good at making babies though:) I loved everything about homemaking--especially sewing. I turned out to be bad at making babies and great at making clothes for the one baby I did get. She's now 10 and is starting to play around with the sewing machines. I'm hopeful!
