It's been 4 days in the making-serious ice conditions on the roadways has stopped all truckers, mail trucks, light rail and bus services. We have had 3 days of no mail delivery. The Portland airport has stopped all incoming and outgoing flights. It's been a real mess. This was a good time to knit and sew, and read. My child has had one more week of Christmas vacation than was planned by the school district. Many restaurants and malls have closed down due to no customers. Bus service stopped and only emergency equipment can get through.

And yet, I'm so glad that I am not in need of hospital care (a bad time to go into labor), although my daughter was born mid December of a snowy year herself. But there was no ice, which is aa whole different scenario. Fortunately, we have not lost our power and we have food and the animals have food. It cold be so much worse for us. We are luckier than some. As we all know here, this does pass after about a week at most, so while we hang in here and suffer "cabin fever" we are still okay.

Many of the folks at the airport were headed to warmer climes and now are stranded at the airport. That's rough. The Red Cross has offered support-blankets, pillows, hot meals, etc.
One thing I'm rather tired of hearing is those folks from Wisconsin, Montana, Michigan mockingly laughing at the Portland standstill. It's much harder enduring the ice when there are a lot of steeper terrains than those in Michigan, for instance.

Well, that's my woe of the new year. What is going on where you all live?

No laughing from here. I feel sorry for you. Snow is bad enough but mix ice and mountainous hills and it's a receipe for disaster.

We had just a couple inches of snow here Sunday and then again yesterday and it's very, very cold.

Like you say, it's a good time to sew or read.
Hang in there, spring is coming

It is England. It is Raining. This is a Good Thing as we had such a dry hot summer that it needs to rain for about two or three months to fill up the reservoirs. We need the type of rain that is slow, steady relentless drizzle though that will trickle through the soil, not the torrents that run off the land straight into the sea.
Our worst winter weather hits late Jan/Feb

I'm in Quebec where we now have mountains of frozen snow and temperature is minus 27 celsius . In Moscow it's minus 14 !
The weather man said it's often colder here than in Russia ... I didn't believe it so I checked and he was right !

Our summer was also very hot in 2003 with little rain (unusual for Oregon), and I had predicted a seriously cold Winter to follow for compensation. We also needed to fill our reservoir at Bull Run and I wondered if that situation has benefitted by the change.

The Siberian tigers and polar bears at the zoo have enjoyed the cold by the elephants are prone to frostbite on their ears and have been kept inside. Cabin fever for those large animals has been a real concern as they want outside.

I-84 was opened yesterday for a short time as long as a vehicle was chained up. However, the I-84 has been closed again this morning. I'm mostly concerned about lack of income for time missed at work. But as long as we have power and food, we'll be okay for a few more days.

Some of the older residents have been unable to get their doors open to let the Red Cross volunteers in to deliver food and check up on people. I hate to think of the news headlines when we come out of this icy period. My sister was telling me about a situation down the street from her regarding horses that haven't been fed and the owner is mentally impaired and threatens anyone who has volunteered to feed his horses now that he's moved! Too bad the Houston ASPCA didn't have jurisdiction up here. The ywouldn't let this happen. (She called the ASPCA and they came out to investigate and said that unless the horses were almost dead, they couldn't do anything). I suggested she contact the news stations. People can be so bizarre!

WeB2cats,

You can send the snow my way, I am so ready for a good ol' snow storm!!! What can I say I love the snow!!!!! It seems the older I get the more my body feels the weather, but I do love watching it snow. I just don't like looking at the gloom of bare trees and ugly grass in the winter. I just wish that we had a fireplace to sit by and watch it snow.

I have so much sewing to do and I just can not get into the mood to do it. Guess it's what you call the "winter blues" I really need to get my fanny in gear as there are other things that need to be done also. You can only clean so much of the house before you realize that you just cleaned it two days ago!!!!! I need to get a part-time job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOw I sound like I'm rambling!!!!!!!:whacky: :whacky: :whacky: :nc:

Does anyone have a cure for the winter blues? Yes the sun is shinning and I have already been out today, it's only 15*F out. And you can only listen to "Days of Our Lives" for so long before it gets BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C an you believe I have never eaten at Quaker Steak and Lube? LOL. I live near the county airport, near West Mifflin, Pleasant Hills. I am only about 15 minutes out of the heart of Pittsburgh. My hubby and I were in Ohio 2 summers ago, quilt shop hopping, up in Berlin, Sugarcreek, Millersburg. DO you know where they are? Great shops....Looking forward to getting back this summer. Sorry about your job.Our governor is pretty goofy too, actually.:whacky: :whacky:

Deb,

I am about a 45-55 minute drive north off Berlin. Barberton is a southwest suburb of Akron and about 3 miles south of I-76. There is a quilt shop that I enjoy going to on Route 93 im Manchester Ohio. I like going there better than Berlin.
My future son-in-law is from Gnaddenhutten Ohio, which is right down in the Amish homeland. We even have a great freight mart place here in town that sells tons of fabric. I just bought some really nice wool for a car coat today for 1.99 a yard!!! If you ever feel like making a trip just let me know and I'll tell you how to get here, it's super easy.

You need to go to QS&L if you like buffalo wings, they have one there that you have to sign a waiver BEFORE they will serve them to you.
There is a place in New Philadelphia Ohio, right off I-77, called "Hog Heaven", if you love ribs this is the place. The owner got the receipe from a man somehwere in either LA or Miss, and they are the BEST I have ever had. They truly make your mouth water at the first bite.

I was in PA over the summer, just to go for a ride and DH and I ended up there!!!!!! I love going thru the tunnel and going out over the river.

i love PA cuz my dad is from there. BUT I STILL LOVE MY BROWNS!!!!!!!!!!:bg: :bg: :bg: :bg:
