My DIL wants me to make them a couple tablecloths for their new table. I told her to measure & let me know what size. She said 62" x 45". How much 45" material should I use, allowing of course for about an inch hem. I am totally LOUSY at math of any kind .... lol. Thanks ..... Donna in CA |

Donna: I am assuming that the 62" x 45" measurement is from edge to edge and not allowing for an 8 to 10" drop all around. So, if the table is 45" wide you will need to add at least an 8" drop on each side that will make the width of the fabric you will need 45 + 16 = 61 + a 1" hem which will equal 62" width of fabic; for the length you will want to add at least an 8" drop on each end which will give you 62 + 16 (8" on each end) = 78 + 1" hem will give you 79" length of fabric. If you are using 45" fabric, you will have to piece the sides. For the length, you will need 79" divided by 36" which will equal 2-1/4 yds of fabric; to get the width of 62", you will need another 2-1/4 yds of 45" fabric and then cut two 17-1/4" strips from this yardage and sew on each side of the 45" strip to get the 62" width. You piece it in this method when you use 45" fabric to prevent having a seam down the middle of your table. I all, you will need at least 4-1/2 yards of 45" fabric. I hope this is clear. Patsy Patsy

Thanks Patsy. Sounds like it would be much easier to use 60" fabric. Or buy them a tablecloth .... lol. I'm going to print out your instructions though. .... Donna |

Donna, a lot of Home Dec fabric comes in 54 inch widths... But , if I were you I would ask them to clarify the measurements they gave you.. Then if you look at Patsy's instructions, she doubled the drop measure but I don't think she doubled the hem measure, just re-check to be sure..I believe you need to add one more inch to each which will give you 63 X 80 instead of 62 X 79..But, you check it..
