What is the difference between the standard foot on your machine and a "walking foot"- The one I bought before, at a showing, we had an option to buy the "walking foot" at half price- so I did- but what would it be used for in most cases? I really need a resource here with terms, etc- would anyone know a site that can help with that? Terms of stitches, functions, parts, etc and what they are for? Would be sooooo helpful- Oh I also have a serger attachment that attaches to the 'foot" area with a foot. Would I be using this a lot? Demonstrated, it looks as though, why would you use anything else- but that's me-(Duh):whacky:

Thx!

A walking foot is generally used in quilting. It helps guide the top fabric while the feed dogs guide the bottom fabric so that everything stays together and even. There may be other uses for it, but this is the only one that I'm currently aware of. Maybe someone more experienced will jump in and give you some more ideas.

ahhh Thankyou Crafty1- I hope to still get some more insight as well but that does help- Still searching for a resources/terms guide- hope to find one that will get me back in the lingo and the know how of a lot of the newer items that machine sewing now offers.

Those of us with Pfaff machines have built in walking feet and will probably tell you we use them most of the time. They are especially good on slippery fabrics that tend to slide when you sew. The walking foot pulls the upper layer of fabric through at the same speed the lower feeds push the bottom layer through.
I would say it is not necessary for denim -- but it won't hurt. It helps keep even heavy fabrics straight so it helps you sew a straight seem.
I've never used a walking foot attachment but they seem to be much bulkier than the one built in on my machine so it might be a bit inconvenient. That I don't know. I do know that, after using one for years, I wouldn't want to be without one again.

i don't use my walking foot with denim unless there is a pattern printed on it, that i want to stay matched up at the end of the seem, i love the walking foot for plaids, before i had a walking foot, the plaids never matched up when i got to the end of the seem, now wa la they are still matching. the walking foot keeps the top and bottom layers moving at the same speed, not much difference i know but, when working with stripes or plaids it helps tremendously

Thx for the replies- at least you all have convinced me that Yes- I would find it very useful to have in the long run- and maybe the very near future. Thx for letting me know the main function of a walking foot- It may also serve a very nice purpose when sewing on crushed velvet or satin- Where I thought this would really be like riding a bike- (just get back on and go)- there are so many things I feel almost dumb to- you all have been a great help with my questions so far- When I sewed before I wasn't an every day sewer or even an every week sewer- so still had plenty tolearn back then I am sure- This will definitely get me in the know and help with getting started again- I thank you all
