Hi, I finally made it back to my love for sewing and after having to deal with issues that didn't allow time to sew, I am so glad to be back with you guys. Can anyone suggest a way to topstitch? I can't get a straight stitch without a guide yet I'm trying to make Lois Erickson's #333 (what a Sport jacket) This pattern is more advanced than I should be trying but I just loved this jacket. Thanks Lefty |

I got a book out of the library (Sewing Shortcuts by Pamela J Hastings) which suggests using a blindhem foot for edgestitching and topstitching. If you use this when stitching extremely close to the edge on collars, cuffs, lapels and blouses the blindhem foot and the positioning of the needle will produce excellent results:- 1 Attach the blindhem foot and set the sewing machine for a straight stitch in the left needle position. 2 Align the edge of your garment with the edge of the blindstitch foot and lower the needle to chexk the positioning of the topstirching. Raise the needle and move the screw to left or right as desired. Stitch close to the edge of your garment and you have a perfect stitch guide. I imagine a 1/4 quilting foot would do as useful a job. To topstitch a pointed collar construct the collar, turn and press. By hand sew one stitch in each collar corner and leave a long tail. Beginning at the base of the collar, stitch to the point. With the needle down, raise the presser foot and turn the fabric ,then lower the presser foot. Begin stitching again holding onto the thread tails to keep the fabric taut. ( stops it getting chewed up) Remove the long stitch when finished. love and kisses, Jan

I've never tried this but it should work. Purchase a package of the 1/4" reuseable quilting tape, it looks like masking tape. Place it against the edge and stitch right along side of it. To get closer then1/4" from the edge, I think there is sewing tape that is 1/8" too. Worth a try. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

I use an edge stitching foot, just like a regular foot with an extra vertical edge added. This vertical bar runs along the edge of the garment and makes keeping straight so much easier. It was pretty cheap to buy, probably under $5. |
