Does anyone else get depressed in Jan./Feb.? I can't seem to function. Things I usually enjoy become hohum and boring. Chores don't get done unless someone whines that they don't have socks, undies, etc. etc. I forget appointments and don't even care. This has been the worst winter yet for me and I don't know what to do. I don't have any friends here yet so that might explain why I am so bad this year. Should I go see a doctor or will they think I am crazy? Come March or April I will be fine if this follows the pattern of all the past years. Is there anything Drs. can do for winter blahs?
Thanks,
Gina

Hi Gina,

If it is really affecting your life, then you should see a doctor.

There is a syndrome...I think it is called SAD(Seasonal Affective Disorder, or something like that)...where certain people are affected by the lack of sunlight. They have a tendency towards depression during the winter months. I think the therapy includes the use of artificial light.

Everyone gets the blahs at one time or the other, but it is sometimes difficult to recognize when you have gone beyond the blahs to something more serious.

Some information:

Donna,

If I ever make it over to Houston I must give you a great big hug!!!! This descibes me perfectly. The only time that I didn't feel this way was when we lived in Florida where the sun shines even when it is raining.

I am going to print out the info on that site and call for a Dr. appointment.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
Gina

Ladies,

Until you mentioned this I had forgotton how I used to feel. I grew up in Washington State and always had the depression you spoke of. I moved to California to go to college and ended up staying. Haven't felt that way since. I can remember hardly being able to function and it was awful!

They have the sunshine lights at Wal-Mart. They are cheaper there than getting one at a Med supply house. My nephews wife has this problem & that's where they got theirs'

Yup, it happens to a lot of people. Lack of sunshine will affect your mood. I don't suffer from SAD, but I know when it rains for a while and then the sun comes out, I feel a whole lot better. :bg:

I sure know where you are coming from. It hasn't been doc diagnosed but I'm pretty sure I have this thing. This year has been better but last Jan. I just sat in my recliner and cried. This year I open blinds, curtains, turn on lights, and keep busy. I'm not a tv person but I've started leaving HGTV on for company. I get some ideas here and there and I don't get addicted(much). This site helps a great deal also. I read the discussion board and it's sort of like talking to someone that I have things in common with. Hope life gets brighter for you!

Hubby hates winter with a passion. I don't like it but I cope with it by keeping busy with my sewing/painting/sculpting/beading, etc. He sits and watches tv and moans about the weather. Hating winter runs in his family. I think he has a mild case of SAD but he says no, just hates winter!!

Interestingly, Tronsko, the most Northern city, (no daylight from Nov21 to jan 21) has a huge problem with SAD. Presumably it affects those in the antipodes in summer?
I have a friend who has SAD and we investigated the lights thing - it seemed to need a huge number of hours sitting under very strong lights to activate the pineal gland - she was a severe case though, still on antidepresants in the summer and possibly munchousans syndome, tricky.

I lived in the tropics, and when I came to the east-coast to attend college, the first year was terrible. I went to the hospital who said this was very common, the doctor said I could go and get artificial lamps, but she recommended a 30min walk in the sun everyday. It helped tremendously.

I grew up in central California and moved to upstate New York. Believe me, the winters in the first 25 years have been hell but I expect it to get better next year. I hibernate (and sew).

A 30 min Walk in the sun would be nice. NBow if we only had 30 minutes of sun a day. :D
