Hi everyone I need some help, I'm making an evening bag for my sister out of that metallic type fabric which is very stretchy (lycra I think),it's a pouch type bag & my problem is Iwant to put a double draw string in the top to close it .Itried to make buttonholes on a piece of scrap but it just didn't work the fabric crinkled too much.I used my walking foot to sew the bag & used a stretcty needle so the bag went to-gether nicely . I left the side seam openabout 1/2 inch near the top to put the cord thru but with this method I can only put 1 cord thru & it looks so much better with 2 .Hope someone can help me out. Barb |

Maybe you need what's used in machine embroidery, some stabilizer. something stiff enough to hold, but won't make the purse weird looking. Tack it with some spray tack and sew. I'd use some med weight, tear away and some sulky kk2000. Chrys

Perhaps you could put a casing in same or nice coordinating fabric on the outside, a little below the top. I did this with a bag I made...I put separate casings on front and back so that there would be an opening on the each end, to pass both cords through. I hope this makes sense!
Take care,

I just made 2 pouch bags from a Simplicity(older) pattern: hope I can explain how. It was lined, and in the seams of the lining, near the top, i sewed a ribbon loop. You might imagine similar to how the button loops of a wedding dress are sewn in?? So, there were 4 seams, a loop (about 1'') in each, toward the inside of the bag. This was where each cord was run and tied, one to each side of the bag. When gathered, the bag puckers closed, and you have two handles to carry it by. A tassel completed the end of each handle. Clear as mud?? Ha ha Kerry Originality is undetected imitation

ladies : Thanx for your suggestions,Idid try making buttonholes with stabilizer under &light plastic as a stabilizer on top but it still puckered.Think I'll try the casings ,I made a dummy bag first out of much cheaper fabric so I'll try it first my hem at the top is about 1/1/2 in. wide so that the beautiful fabric will show when I use the draw -string. I did understand your instr. Donna thanx again. Barb |

Kay that sounds nice, you just gave me an idea for that also, recently I made a blouse and black skirt for my daughters 40th birthday, and i didn't have a nice little bag for the event,I have some black fabric left over and will make one of those to match my outfit. My blouse is emerald green mandarin collar, and self coverd buttons,& long sleeves. The skirt is long black with a slit/vent up each side, where i put matching blouse fabric on one side of the vent so that when i walk the vent opens and shows the emerald green fabric. Now my creative ideas are flowing here for a nice bag lol.TY If at first you don't suceed, try-try again!

Making a drawstring bag is not as hard as you may think.when ever I made one i use 2 cords, first put a seperate fabric to put the cords thru, forget the name now grrrrrrrr blond hair day here lol. Thread one cord in first and tie a knot in the end which can be hiden in the binding,Next thread the other one BUT in opposite direction tie a knot also. There must be an opening each end for the cords to come out and use for handles sorta lol. Hope this helps you and is clear too. If at first you don't suceed, try-try again!

Thanx for the input,I've finally finished the bag ,the difficult thing was the fabric,it is a lycra type with silver metallic shot with colour.very stretchy!!!!! used my walking foot & stretch needle it's lined with coat lining(can't remember the name of it)(blond moment too, altho my hair is pure white) I ended up stitched in the ditch then made a seam above it ,had left openings in each side seam to draw the cording thru so it's done ,sure hope my sister likes it. Barb thats sounds lovely what you did, perhaps next time u make it from lycra, it may be possible to reinforce the top with some kind of interfacing to prevent too much stretching eh? Where theres a will theres a way GGGGls. If at first you don't suceed, try-try again!

Barb, I made my son a shirt with the metallic fabric. I used waxed paper on both sides of the fabric to make my buttonholes, jsut sewed it a a slower speed and the fabric flows great , just make sure that you use LOTS of rubbing alcohol on your needle to clean the gummy junk from the metallic. I also loosened my tension just a smidge. |

I use coffee filters for my buttonholes ,it doesn't gum up the needle then, and tears away neatly.
