i am working on my first fleece vest. can you please explain to me the process of putting that stretchy band around the edges of a fleece garment (arm holes and bottom edge). i have heard that it is simply a strip of lycra. is this the best idea and how is it sewn on? new member. happy to be here. thanks for the help, tortuga |

This info is straight from pattern info for binding armholes, and yes it is lycra. With right sides of fabric (lyrca) together and long edges even, stitch two short ends of armhole binding to form a circle.(finger press seam allowance open). With wrong sides of fabric together and long edges even, zig-zag edges of fabric together. Matching binding seamline with vest underarm seam , and matching shoulder markings, pin binding to wrong side of armhole fabric. Cut edges of binding should be even with cut edges of armhole. Stitch binding to fabric edges at 3/8"seam allowance, stretching as you stitch.Fold binding around fabric edges to just beyond the seam line. Pin. Stitching close to folded edge of binding , stitch binding to right side of vest fabric. The bottom is similar, except for circle, and they fold 3/8" seam allowance back at zipper stitching line center front and stitch on the same way as above. Hope this helps. |

Here's a tip: when I looked at stretch Lycra bindings there was not much color selection and none at all that worked with my fleece color. I ended up buying the minimum possible length of the stretchiest swimwear fabric available and had loads of colors to choose from. It is not quite as stretchy as the binding but close enough that you can use just a little more. Cut strips across the width of the yardage to make the pieces you need. |
