Hey Guys! Been a little while since I posted! I love to do heirloom sewing. I have lots of techniques that I still want to learn but it is difficult, no one around here does any heirloom sewing. There are several smockers that I know...
Just wondering how many of you smock, or do lace inserts ar maybe pintucks... The list could go on and on!

I would love to hear from others that love this type of sewing...

Thanks,
Jennifer

Oh yeah, its been over 4 months since my last cigerette! I officially decided that I am a non smoker!:bg:

Congratulations on the non-smoking Jennifer... I'm coming up on my 5 year anniversary on the 8th of Feb..
I have done some lace insertions several times in the different shapes.. (diamond, circle, oval, square and rectangle.. I do hankerchiefs to try out the different shapes and they have all turned out so pretty.. I add gathered lace to the edges and have a nice gift to give someone as a meaningful gift. I used to make them for my Mom until she passed away.. She always had to have a hankie in her purse to go to church..She loved to show them off and say her Dtr made them..
My sister has a new Grdtr and she recently took a smocking class to learn how to do that.. She made a very pretty dress for my great niece in her class. I never had a girl so that is one needle skill I never attempted. I love smocking, it is very attractive..

Hello,
I just began smocking(not smoking!) and was wondering if you have any good websites for patterns, supplies, etc. I would like to find nice heirloom fabrics for a reasonable price. I have a Dr. Joe's (Pullen) pleater and just took a class to learn how to pleat. Thanks for any info you may have. Congrats on being an official "non-smoking" smocker!! Blessings, Miko

Hi! I'm a newbie here! Been smocking for 20 years, heirloom sewing for about 16. Just had my first daughter. Funny, but now I have no time to do heirloom sewing for her. All my embroidery is by machine!!! Perhaps when she's older...

Goochgirl, I would love to hear about your heirloom sewing and smocking. I love it but don't have anyone who appreciates it to make it for. :nervous:

Well, I have more smocking plates than i could ever make; actually sold some on ebay last year to thin out my collection. Will never part with my Australian smocking magazines, but did get rid of all my SB's and many CN's. I'm getting a little more practical with my sewing, now. I'll still make foofy pinafores, but keep the dresses simple. Starting to thin out my fabrics as well, been collecting that for 20 years. The childs closet doors dont close as it is!!! would rather snuggle with baby than sew for her right now! sl

If my memory serves me Meaghane is one of those mad smocking people! Perhaps you could pm her and say hi!

I still have the sampler I did with my just adopted baby girl infant in my lap back in '82. I did some garments for her - most especially her First Birthday Dress - which is put away for posterity!
still have my pleater - and certainly am praying for a little grand daughter to smock for some day! My daughter is 'in love' and perhaps a wedding coming in the next year - and - contrary to so many - she WANTS to be a stay at home mom and have kids! Yea - I did something right!!!

I don't smock, but I love drooling over the clothes in the "Sew Beautiful" magazines! I continue to buy them, telling myself that I can always use the free patterns! Hee Hee!!!

I did a beautiful pintuck and lace insertion heirloom-style nightie for my grandmother (with a matching one for my daughter- she loves the little nightcap I made to go with it). I'd like to try another item - maybe a blouse for my grandma.

I love the look of heirloom clothes but don't make many for my girls as they are not practical for school and they take a lot of time. Maybe someday in the future when I am sewing for grandchildren! LOL

Heirloom sewing in general - saved my sewing 'career'! I was doing custom dressmaking and was sick of lined wool skirts and blazers - til I found Heirloom ini Nashville, TN on a vacation. My girl was 3 by that time. I then launched into patterns for adults - another long story. Anyway - that led to opening a business here in central Il where I thought everyone would want to dress and dress their children like that! SURPRISE!!! nOT!!! I share all this just to observe that Heirloom is much more popular for anything other than - say a christening gown or some very frilly home dec 'south of the mason/dixon line" as they say. Perhaps up there in Canada as well - but the casual midwest - didn't work. I changed and 'rode another horse' for business, by the way! Still love it though.....

I definitely do NOT see heirloom clothing here. Some lingerie but that's about it. I made my daughter an heirloom blouse for graduation. It was just beautiful, took about 40 hrs. in all.
