I have been reading books and on the message boards about how to correctly figure out what size pattern to buy, where to take measurements, flat pattern measuring etc.

I am not sure I am understanding this completely yet. There are 2 sets of measurements on the backs of my pattern pieces, the body measurements and the garment measurements. I am told to go down a size from what I measure. I am told patterns are designed for B cups.

Can someone really clarify all this so I can understand how to get the best fit? I am working on maternity clothes for my daughter who right now is a 42DD but usually wears in RTW 14 or 16 clothes. Where should I be taking bust and hip measurements at?

I am doing my best here and really trying to learn this. I am going to be sewing for adults and kids too.

Thanks in advance
Jolene

Jolene for the bust measurement, take what is called a high bust measurement. Take your tape measure and put it around the back in the middle of the shoulder blades and pull it under the arms at the top of the bust. Then you alter your patter for the full bust measurement which is taken by taking your measurement around the back and directly across the bust point. Use the high bust measurement or the one closest to it on the pattern envelope to purchase a pattern for blouses, jackets, etc. As for the hip measurement, measure at the fullest part of the hips. Because I tend to have a little paunch in the front I pull the tape measure up a little and over the fullest part of my stomach so I have plenty of ease in the pants or skirt to allow for the poochy stomach.

If you can find a entitled book called Fit for Real People by Patti Palmer and Maarta Alto. It is a very, very good book on how to measure and then alter for full bust measurements, etc.

I am making a jumper for my GD. She needs a size 6 for length but she could go to a size 3 or 4 for waist. This is going to be tough to decide what size to make since this is loose anyway. This is new look 6208.
Any thoughts,
Jolene
