I just bought some soil separator fabric and am wondering the best way to trace the pattern onto it. Would I pin down the tissue, use tracing paper and then go back with a pen and trace the lines and markings onto it? Want to start this tonight. Thanks,

Jolene

I've never used this, but understand it is similar to the pattern tracing cloth. I put mine over the pattern and draw over the pattern lines, which are thick and visible through it. I think I saw a suggestion to put the pattern on top and use a marker to trace over the lines, which will bleed right through the pattern tissue onto the layer below. Why not try a couple of methods using scrap pieces from the blank parts of the pattern.

When I trace patterns using soil separator cloth, I press the tissue pattern with a barely warm iron then lay it out on the table. I then put the 'cloth' over the paper pattern and trace it with a regular #2 pencil.

I have to thank you all for the great suggestions. I am just getting back into sewing and never really learned it the right way. I did go and get some of the soil separator fabric. This stuff is great. My impressions so far....I like crayons the best so far for tracing. I also use the gel pens. I don't like the markers because of bleeding through.

I do have a question, what is the best to do then when you lay it on material with it being mulit sized? Will the tracing wheel ruin it if I trace my markings thru it? Thanks,
Jolene

One of the important reasons for transferring to another piece of paper is to trace off just the size you need. I don't understand the question, are you going to trace all the sizes? If I want to make a pattern in different sizes I trace them separately. I've done this a lot with kids' patterns as they grow.

Yes, I am tracing off all the sizes because I am using the pattern for different people and I need to combine different sizes to get the right size, so that is why I am tracing them all off.

I always use the crayola washable markers on mine... less bleed thru... I also like B or softer art pencils, never thought about crayons... will have to try that one!
