I am making an appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow. My eye is getting worse and worse everyday. My Mother had cataracs removed off her eyes when she was in her early 40's so I'm sure that's probably what it is that's causing me my cloudy vision. It looks like I'm looking out a frosted window in one eye. It's worse with glare or headlights coming at me. I hope that's all it is I had lunch with my sister yesterday and she told me I should go see about it my Mother's sister has glucoma and she said it runs in the family. That's all I need. Anyone had either of those things cataracs or glucoma? I'd like all the input you have. I'm really worried I need my eyes to sew and cook!!!!!!

Hey Susie, everything is SO high tech now, that cataract surgery these days is fairly simple. from what I understand.. I worked with a lady a couple years ago and the recovery period is very minimal. My SIL had it last year and did very well. Best of luck to you.:bluesmile

Thanks Debby, I just read up on it and it sounds pretty easy. They do it locally but I'm a ninney when it comes to my eyes. Just thinking about it makes me nauseaed and want to throw up. I watched them do lastic surgery on my husbands eyes and it was cool but for some reason when it's on me I'm not so sure. LOL I've had back surgery, cecearan sections, and root canal but my eyes yuck I chicken. Has anyone been put to sleep for this. My step sister told me they did it for her I guess I'll have to ask if they'll do it for me. Thanks Debby for the pep talk. I need all I can get.

Hi Susie,
You shouldn't be afraid of cataract surgery or glaucoma nowadays. I have glaucoma, kept under control with drops once a day. I have also had cataract surgery on both eyes. It's a breeze. Although it's done under local anaesthetic they give you a tranquilizer either be drip or by injection which removes all the anxiety. I used to wear glasses all the time and now I wear them only for reading. The restriction on my driving license(that I must wear glasses)has been removed ! Go for it !

My neighbor had catarac surgery, said there was nothing to it. And believe me, if she could complain she would.

Thanks everyone for the confidence. I'll let you know when I can get an appointment so you can cheer me on I'll need everything you got. As far as the tranquilizer they better give me several. I'm a big chicken when it comes to my eyes. I know its not a bad surgery and my hubby is backing me up on this, he's very attentive when it comes to my health, so I'm in good hands. It's getting really bad it's starting to make me sick after a while trying to see out of that eye. They other eye is strained trying to compensate. It's time for me to go. Thanks everyone I'll keep you in formed.

"The biggest thing to fear is fear itself" I have to remember that quote and keep thinking it until this is over. Brain wash myself.

another useful phrase -
" give me the drugs and give them to me NOW"
make sure you tell your consultant about your anxiety - they are used to helping people. And bear in mind, there are so much chemicals in your eyes you cannot focus - you won't see them coming towards ready to touch your eyes - I wear contacts so I am so used to touching my eyeballs it doesn't bother me. I know when I'm putting my lenses in I can't see them when my hand is up close so the same will apply to you. You can do it Susie!

Jan ..........I like that attitude, your quote " give me the drugs and give them to me NOW" That's really good to know that you don't see it coming. I would flinch and then the laser would probably erase my whole eye ball. I get queezy just thinking about fooling around with my eyes. I get very sick in the stomach and pains in my shoulder blades, dizzy and nausea sets in and then I'm almost to the point of passing out. Which I've done on several occasions before. Just started passing out cold in the last 10 years of my life. One time after a migraine headache, and another time after being dehydrated from a stomach virus. Both times I woke up not knowing how I got on the floor. Anyway, I will discuss it with the doctor about my fears, I just hope he understands that I'm not a ninney when it comes to doctors it's just when it comes to my eyes. Thanks

Susie, it a misquote what I said to the midwife when my first child was in the process of being born....
" Give me the needle and give it to me NOW", her response was
"too late, suck on that" and passed me the gas and air. Being a singer I inhaled deeply and then passed out - feeling as I came round that I had had 4 rums in rapid sucession. Her comment on that was:
"Most people don't know how to breath!"
Next child and I nearly missed the whole drug thing entirely - gave me the gas to stop me pushing before the midder had unpacked her equipment! 20 mins later gave it to me again while they sewed me back up -
I have found prior to operations they never give me the pre-op calming drugs as I don't seem agitated. ( something to do with the hour long praise session under the blankets...)
Just talk to them honestly, they need you to be relaxed , it makes their job easier.
love and kisses, Jan

Susie,
If your cataract(s) will be by laser surgery then disregard my earlier post because mine were not done that way. However, I'm sure it will be just as painless and unevenful. Good luck.

LOL So I will get the nerve up on Monday and bite the bullet and do it. Thanks for all your cheering on from everyone. Ya'll are a great bunch of people.

Oh I'm so sorry Lise, I called first thing this morning and a lady answered and she said I would have to call back on Wednesday the office for the doctor I am going to is closed until then. But at least I tried. LOL I was up early this morning to get a jump on it too. Thanks Lise for remembering about me. It makes me feel so loved. Thanks everyone for all your support, you too Bren.

My step Dad is being taken off of dialysis. :bluesad: The dialysis isn't helping him anymore so they are stopping all of it. The doctors told my step sister he will be gone with in the week. The family really needs prayers. In case everyone didn't know he was dianoised with bone cancer in September and wasn't given much time then and here he still is. I guess the Lord isn't ready for you till he's ready for you to go like they say because he's living proof. He has a daughter in California and a son in Texas, they are coming in to be with him. I'll keep you informed on him and my eyes. I've worked up the courage to have it done. Ya'll convinced me to be brave.

I started deep cleaning my house today so when I get this done I won't feel so bad  that it was plenty dirty and I couldn't see it with my eyes the way they are.

Thanks Lisa and Mary, Now my step Dad's daughter is in from California and they are saying he may not stop dialysis. This poor man is saying he is ready but I don't think he's ready to say no more. I think he wants the doctors to say it. It changes from one day to the next of what they are going to do with him. I will keep you informed. Thanks for all the support.

Sorry about your step-dad, Susie. I will be praying for him.

My husband had cataracts removed about four years ago. It took him a long time to decide to do it, too, so they were pretty bad by the time he had it done. The day after the first one was done he had 20/20 vision but it went downhill from there and he was really upset. The doctor wasn't worried about it and said that when he did the other one it would be okay and it was. Somehow the lens in one eye works for reading and the other for distance, but you don't notice the difference. Now he rarely uses his glasses. When it was all done he was sorry he had waited so long.

By the way, after having the surgery you can get a secondary cataract. He was not told about this before so was upset that his vision was again getting worse. He had to have laser treatment (just zapped for a few seconds in the doctor's office--no pain) on one eye and may need it on the other one before too long, but it was a piece of cake. Guess it happens quite often so don't worry about it if that should happen.

I think you will be happy when it is all done.

Thanks Janice and everyone your support is making it easier for me to deal with. I wish all of you could be there in the surgery room with me. :nah: You will be I know in thought. I'm just a big chicken when it comes to my eyes. If they would have told me it was back surgery or anything else I don't think it would have bothered me anymore. I had back surgery I know what to expect for that one. I think the recovery on the back surgery is the humdinger.

I made the appointment for Feb. 9th, this Monday coming for 2:45PM. I will be there early I know agonizing over this, but I know I will be okay.....................if I don't get sick on the stomach and throw up. Nah I'll be okay. I just wish it were tomorrow I was having it done and I could get it over with.

Thanks again to all of you for your kindness.

Okay ladies, today is the day. In about 4 hours I will be sitting in the eye exam chair with the doctor handing down the verdict. LOL I'm okay a little anxious but I'm okay. I hope he tells me to go in tomorrow and get it done and over with but I know that's asking too much. He'll probably make me wait a week of holy torture and then do it. LOL I won't be able to come back to the boards until tomorrow, the last time I had my eyes dialated it took until the next day before I could see without them hurting me from the glare of the lights. So I will let you know tomorrow what I find out. And thanks to all of you for your support.

Hello all, I'm back and yes I do have a big caterac on my left eye and another one on the other eye. I have the fast growing kind so he is doing surgery on the left eye next Tuesday and the other one a week from that. He assured me he would give me lots of something to make me relaxed. I told him it better be something powerful because I'm a wuss. He assured me it would be. No problem. Although I did get sick to my stomach when she measured my eyes. She told me the surgery would be not as bad as what she did to me today. So I guess I'll be okay. She said some people go to sleep during surgery and wake up when it's over. I.... hope.... I'm one of........ them. {singing} He told me the one on my left eye was very thick and it was no wonder it was affecting my vision. I won a bet with my husband he thougth it was just poor eye sight I had no caterac. I've never had to wear glasses and caterac's run in the family so I would have bet the farm if I were a betting person, it was a caterac. Thanks everyone for all the help you have given me and Thanks for all the prayers.

Love and Hugs susie Oh Boy now I will be able to see to thread the needle again. Alright!!!!!

Susie,
You will do so well, its so easy nowadays.. My Mom had it done on both her eyes , (one at a time, of course).. We checked her in, went to breakfast in the cafeteria, and before we were finished, the eye surgeon was looking for us to give us the results of her surgery.. She had to be at hosp, at 6:30 am, and I had her back home at 9:30 am.. 2 days later she could read newspaper without her glasses and she had not been able to do that in a lot of years... they made her wait 30 days for second eye, and she got along just as well that time.. You will do great , girl-friend...
I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers..

Susie, my turn is coming up probably around May (my next visit to the eye doctor. He told me last year whenever I was ready he would do the job. Gonna have it done before I retire so the State of Oklahoma will foot the bill for the entire thing except my co-pay.

Thanks Patsy and Lib, I have no insurance. My husband was self employed and when we had insurance it was over 600.00 a month and at one time we couldn't afford it so we had to let it go. It will cost me 6100.00 out of pocket plus the visit today was 70.00. That's suppose to be for the hospital and the doctor's total cost for both eyes. I only have to pay 3050.00 when I go on Tuesday and the other when I go back in one week. The Lord takes care of things we need when we need it and I have the money at this time to pay for it, so I'm feeling good about that part. It could have come at a time when I didn't have the money and then I'd have to stay blind before I was old enough for medicare to kick in in 10 or so years. He takes care of us and I know that because it always works out for me somehow. Funny part is I keep thinking what I could do with that money if I didn't have cateracs. LOL BLOW IT for sure. Nah :nah: Thanks ladies for all your support through this.

Oh Susie, how I wish my grandmother was alive to for you to talk to! She was blind for 20 years, had many cataracts and glaucoma, and had one of the very first cornea transplants - she made medical history, and even made a film for the eye institute to reassure people coming after her that the surgery was wonderful. After 20 years, she could bake, read a recipe, read the paper, and see her beloved soap operas that she had only listened to for years. I remember her telling me that she was awake for the cataract surgery, but that she saw NOTHING. [She wasn't blind at that time, lol]. I am sure, with the advances in modern medicine, that it's even easier now.

Your eyes are SO important, I'm glad you're finding the courage to go through with this. I'll be praying for you!

Hi Susie,
Glad you are so upbeat now about having your castaracts done.
I'm shocked by the cost and realize how fortunate I am that I had mine done in Canada,----- didn't cost me a cent.
Raising $7,000 would have been tough.
Good luck,

Thanks Lise, Maps and Allieoop,

Allie,.............My mother had caterac surgery when they removed the lens altogether and you had to wear those thick coke bottle glasses, we use to call them her googly eyes. She had hard contacs which were every annoying you had to put them in every morning and take them out at night and use the glasses when they were out. She finally had the reverse surgery in October 2002 and she died in May of 2003. She had to lay flat for a week with sand bags around her head after the first surgery and the second she was up and around doing her little things around the house the next day and didn't need glasses for anything. It's wonderful now a days. They told me yesterday it runs in families. We have glucoma in our family too but so no one has it in my immediate family out of my siblings so far.

Lise, .............. I'm was very forturnate to have a Mother who left us a little life insurance. She is paying for this even after her death. I know she is looking down in heaven at me and cheering me on. She knows how squemish I am. My husband had the lasic (sp) surgery 2 years ago and it only cost 1500.00 for both eyes. I had to be complicated. LOL

Maps.............. thanks for the prayers. Save some for next Tuesday. That's when I will really need them. Not so much for the surgery but for the agony I'll be going through before it's all done.

Love ya lots Susie

Yay Susie! well done! the worst bits is over and now you can look forward to having a quiet snooze while they sort out the eyeballs. After Monet had his cataracts done he wanted to destroy all the painting s he had done previously as the colours were all wrong - the cataracts had affected his colour vision. Good job he was stopped or we wouldn't have some fab paintings.. Just be prepared for how amazing the world is going to be again - I'm really excited for you.

Oh how I wish that were true Mary. I have to go on the 17th next Tuesday. LOL I have 7 more days to agonize. But I'll be okay. I anxious to get it done now. I can't see to do my sewing anymore. I go cross eyed my half way good eye is trying to compensate for the bad eye and it's pulling it cross eyed on me. I can't read my magazines either. I will be fine once it's done and over with I'm sure.

It's over and it was not a piece of cake. My pressure was high when I went in and when they went to do the surgery it dropped the top number went below 90. When I came home I got a sick headache in the base of my neck and head and in my temple. Seems some people get pressure that builds up behind the eyeball and I was one of them. I'm doing much better now and I'm very tired so I'm going to bed. The surgery was uncomfortable but it really didn't hurt and it doen't hurt now but when I first got home EYYYEYYYY my head. And I can see so clear out of that eye now it's patched but they have holes in the patch. It's a little blurry but it's a clear blurry not the fuzzy blurry like it was. Thanks everyone for your thougths and prayer. I will keep you informed tomorrow after I come back from the doctors.

Hugs susie

PS I was not the ninny I could have been the lady next to me was so scared this was her second time coming to get the same eye done. They finally had to put her to sleep for it.

I know what you mean about not getting to have that first cup of caffeine in the morning, I remember my hysterectomy, i couldnt wait to get my cappuchino as soon as I was allowed...lol. Take care and dont push yourself to do too much. You will have plenty of time to revisit your clearer world....:bg: :bg: :bg:

Sorry you had a rough time, but at least this one is over. Maybe the next one will be better. When my husband had his done a few years ago he was given a light anesthetic and asleep for the few minutes it took. I would think being asleep would keep the blood pressure down because you wouldn't be so stressed. Take it easy and enjoy your new vision.

Oh Susie, I'm so glad for you that it's over - and I'm sorry you had a rough time. I would have been that ninny in the other chair, lol! I hope you can see wonderfully now!
Blessings,

Poor Susie! Such a pity that you had a problem after we all assured you that there was nothing to it. However, in spite of what happened I'm sure you consider it worth it. Be good to yourself and take it easy for a few days.

Susie clean out your mail box. I tried to send you an e-mail and it came back with the message that your mail box is full and can't receive any more messages.

Sorry Patsy,

I'm trying to stay off the computer as much as possible. The glare is still hurting my eyes. I'm having to wear sunglasses to watch TV but I can't type with my reading glasses and the sunglasses won't fit over them. I'm doing okay now my eyes are really sore and every now and then they feel like something is sticking me but other than that I'm doing okay. I can see wonderful out the eye that was done now. I didn't know the other eye was as bad as it is until I started seeing out of the one that is fixed. It's like looking out a dirty windshield with a dirt film over it and then you clean the windshield and that's what it looks like. Really clear.

Did you fix the pasta? I hope you did. Emeril fixed it tonight on his program and I didn't get to see what all he put in his, I was busy putting drops in my eyes when he started making it and by the time I came back in the room it was over. I'll watch it again when he comes on at 11:00PM.

Thanks everyone for the cheering me on. I thought about all of you in surgery and it took my mind off what they were doing to me.

Hugs Susie

Susie I did fix the pasta tonight and it is very good. The color kind of threw me a first until I realized the coloring is coming from the cajun spices. I'm just not sure about how it will reheat since I had to go ahead and make it tonight. I bought a bottle of Cajun Seasoning this evening at hte grocery store so now I will have it when I want to try a cajun recipe.

Glad to hear that you're progressing nicely after your surgery. What happended to you kind of makes me dread it when the time comes I have to have the same surgery. Anyway, I'm not going to think about it until the time comes.

I will let you know how the gang at my office like the shrimp pasta tomorrow afternoon.

Oh good Patsy, It warms well. As a matter of fact I like it better the next day. It marinates itself in the fridge over night and the seasonings blend and taste even better. At least I think they do. When you take it out the fridge it will look thick and stuck together. When it warms it loosens up again.

The surgery, now that it's over wasn't that bad. It was very uncomfortable because you know what they are doing while they are doing it but you can't really see them doing it, if that makes sense. The first day was my hardest when I came home was the worse part of the whole ordeal. After the first, I'd say, 6 hours of being home was over and the headache I had let up then I started to feel better. I'm weird so you can't go by how I felt. I went through three cecearean sections and with each I was out the bed walking that evening. I had back surgery and they wouldn't let me up for the first 5 days but I wanted to get up. I'm not a wimp when it comes to pain anywhere except in the head area. That headache felt like my head was going to pop. The doctor said it doesn't happen to everyone. It was just me. Like everyone said I think I scared myself being it was my eye and my eyes are my weakness. If it were that bad I wouldn't go back and get the other one done in a week or so. You'll do fine and like everyone told me don't be scared, I see so much better now. I have to learn how to look out my new looker again. My vision in that eye went from not being able to read the chart at all, to being able to read all the way to the bottom of it the next day after surgery.

Let me know how everyone likes the pasta.

Hugs Susie

Susie, I'm glad you are doing better all the time. I don't remember my husband saying anything about the glare after his surgery, except outside. But, maybe your eyes were worse than his and you just need time to adjust. Hope the next one is completely uneventful. Is it scheduled for next week?

Dh is scheduled for double knee replacements on St. Patrick's Day. We aren't looking forward to that except that he should be able to walk without pain again in a few months. It is such fun getting old, but at least the doctors can make some things so much better.

Mary,

It felt really good to take it easy the first day and not have to do anything but now I'm sick of babying myself these last few days. I've got a bad case of CABIN FEVER. I think I'm going to wash my hair tomorrow and try and get out the house a little. I can drive after 4 days and wash my head then too so if I cut the head thing a day short I'll put some tape and a peace of plastic over the eye really good so no dirty water can run in I'll be okay. I wash my hair everyday when I shower and it's hard for me to go around with a greezzzzzy head:cry:

Janice,

The glare is from the lights in my house. I made my hubby put up 4 foot florescents in the office and in my sewing room 4 bulb ones at that, when I couldn't see, now I can see they are too bright. At least this soon after surgery they are hurting my eyes like when you come out a dark theater and into the sunlight how your eyes hurt from the glare. It maybe they are sensitive this soon after surgery. He told me it would take a month for my eyes to adjust enough for him to tell what my vision is now. So it takes a while for your eyes to stablize. Thanks for all the concerns and prayers.

Hugs susie

Hi Susie,
Just to wish you a second op.as uneventful as both of mine were. I never had a moment's pain or discomfort and drove myself to the hospital for the checkup the following morning. The only thing that bothered me was the nuisance of putting the drops in and wearing the eye cover at night for a short time afterwards.
I'm sure you'll be luckier this time than you were the first time.....you deserve it.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Lise,

I felt better after the headache let up. My hubby wouldn't let me drive or do anything until the doctor told me I could. His Dad had cateracs removed and they tried to put in several types of implants and his eye rejected them all so they had to sew his eye on one side shut permanately and the other was almost blind in because he didn't get it done and it had a catarac. Poor thing. Anyway, if the doc said no driving for 4 days it was no driving for that long. Not being able to wash my hair and not sleeping on that side for the few days was my miserable part of it. Patching the eye to sleep wasn't that bad for me I didn't feel the patch on at night. The headache was not very pleasant but it went away as soon as I put the ice on it. So I know what to do this time.

I'll let you all know how I do. My eye that I did already is scratchy sometimes put I think that's normal too for some people. I keep putting in the drops he told me they would last probably a month.

I had cataract surgery 4 years ago and it was a breeze! They did one eye one week and the other eye the next week because they had progressed at the same rate until I needed surgery. I had 20/20 vision when the cataracts started and I popped right back to 20/20 after the surgery. I never had a problem and was reading without glasses one week after surgery. This spring I had the laser surgery to remove filaments that had grown under the lenses and it took approximately 10 seconds for both eyes and I'm still reading without glasses, even fine print and I am 77. Not one of my 7 children can go without their glasses or contacts. My daughter Shauna is having the laser surgery they do to improve really poor vision this summer. She teaches school and is an artist. Marilynntx

Hi Marilynn,

My eyes are 20/20 now too. I do need the glasses to read and see fine print. You are lucky not to have them. My hubby had the laser surgery and did really well. He needed glasses all his life and now doesn't. He has 20/20 now too.

Susie, when you had the cataract surgery did you do what I did, just lie there and look at the gorgeous swirling colors? No one told me it would be like that, but it was beautiful! MariLynn

I was scared to death all I did was pray that it would be over soon. But I did see the colors and yes they were beautiful. I had a real hard time before making myself even go and have it done. I'm very squirmish when it comes to my eyes. but now that it's over I realized my fear was for nothing. I'm glad it's over now. LOL:bg:

Well, when I am in a hospital situation, I do like I did when the kids were taking driver's ed and I was riding with them all the time...just commend my soul to God and pray to get out in one piece! They wouldn't let their dad go with them...he would get all uptight and yell at them and make them too nervous to do things right! They begged me to ride with them and I actually began to enjoy having instant chaffeurs. MariLynn
