i am having trouble getting the tension exactly right with my new (to me) 4 thread serger.
would it be less complicated if i just serged with three threads? which thread do i eliminate?
thanks for you advice.

Hi Tortuga,

If you want a wide overedge, remove the right needle. If you want a narrow overedge, remove the left needle.

What is the problem with the stitch you tried? Perhaps if you describe it, someone here can help you.

Have you checked your serger manual? It should have a chart showing several different settings. More times than not when I serge two layers of cotton fabric., the settings are 3.5, 2.5, 2 and 2.5.[that's for left needle, right needle, upper looper and lower looper] Can you be more specific with the problem? Post again.
