I just found this site and boy am I glad. I have my mothers upper arms and nothing fits. I have an unlined fitted jacket pattern by Simplicity and need an extra 2 inches in the upper arm. Can anyone tell me an easy way to get the 2" I need? I sure hope someone can help because I have no clue how to do it. Thank you in advance. I have a feeling I'll be coming here often. |

I was surprised to see an answer to my post so soon. I checked first thing this morning to see if anyone had checked in. I have the jacket cut out and all that was left was the sleeve. Someone told me to cut the pattern down the middle to below the elbow and then cut across. Stick pin in the pivot point and slide the 2 pattern pieces away from the center till I get the 2". The trouble with that is,by the time I get the 2" at the bicep the top is a healthy 3". Would it work to slid the pieces over a inch then pivot them out? |

Nancy Zieman has covered this topic, check her site at www.NancysNotions.com maybe you can get extra help there. Just remember what you add onto the sleeve you also have to allow for the armhole. |

I have large upper arms and find that I need to shorten the sleeve cap and lengthen the side seam since I have narrow shoulders. One way to open up the sleeve is to make 2 slits along each side of the grainline and add in 1/2 inch each for a total of 2 inches. However for ease in movement of the arm, 3 inches is about right or you may want to add a bit more. I don't like tight sleeves and it's taken me several tries to come up with the perfect fitting sleeve. Now, I use that as a base model for all sleeve patterns and do not have any trouble getting them to fit. Happy Stitching! Marty in TN It takes one moment to change a life.
